Here is the deal on ads. If I get a "free" service from someone I expect to see ads as way of me "paying" for the "free" service (my eyeballs are worth something to someone). If I have purchased a service with my hard-earned money I damned well expect there to be NO ads at all, unless I specifically request them. Ads on Wayz app on my smart phone work a lot like the ones described in the first article linked. They pop up when the car is not moving and let me know that there is a hot dog joint just a little out of my way. The effectiveness of such ads in my particular case is highly questionable, but that's a different discussion. The point is that Wayz is not charging me anything to use their service, so ads are a way for them to pay for it. I get it. However, if I purchased a car with a navigation system on it, I would consider said navigation system bought and paid for. In that case ads would not be appropriate. If they sell me only the hardware and say the services running on the hardware is extra, then it would be up to me to order the service (and either pay via subscription or ads) or decline. I am not sure if this will be structured in such a way that consumer can choose to buy and/or have ads. Also, I can easily run an ad blocker on my web browser and avoid the ads, so the countermeasure technologies to this horrible practice will evolve, I am sure. I hope the manufacturers are aware of that. My car is an extension of my home, which is a safe place and if I choose to not have ads in my life then I should be able to choose so in my car as well as in my home.

Just some ramblings this morning. The invasiveness of ads is something that really bugs me and I think there is a better way to advertise than ram unwanted things down people's throats.

I would certainly support the "Nobel Peace Prize" for the inventor of the Fast Forward Button!
It's possibly the single most needed invention that makes recording TV worthwhile!!!
Remember, you can watch a 1 hour program in 41 minutes if you FF the intros & ads!!

Buddy!! I'm with you, but I think we're fighting a losing battle with Big Brother. When you go to movies now, after shelling out some $12 apiece, you're now BOMBARDED by BS commercials for 20 minutes before the movie. They took away our cartoons (do you remember?!), and slammed us with these garbage commercials. I now rarely go to movies, and if I do, I make sure to be 20 minutes late. Ridiculous!!

I hope to keep my cars from being Internet-connected too, for as long as practical.

My cell phone is Internet-connected part time, when I say so, and intentionally disconnected most of the time. And it is not electronically connected to the car.

I don't think it's a loosing battle. You and I both don't frequent movie theaters. If they bothered to ask us, we'd tell them why. Also, I run an ad blocker on my browser and if I think I am bombarded by ads I 1). make sure to NEVER patronize the advertised entity (I have not so much as touched coca-cola in over 25 years. That goes for many other obnoxiously advertised products), 2). remove myself from the environment that subjects me to said ads (I have not had cable TV for over 25 years, do not get magazines and other forms of obnoxious advertising). This limits my exposure to bare minimum of street signs, etc.

Clearly, I am in minority, but I think this is what it's going to take to change the behavior of ad pushers.

Ever notice that every movie these days has upwards of 10 "producers", and each of them requires a 5~10 second flying of the flag, in the opening credits of the actual movie? This is AFTER the 20 minutes of ads.

I stopped going to the movies when people started talking on their cell phones there.

The only theatre still in business around us is a multiplex with the ambience of a Las Vegas casino, haven't been in nearly a decade.

We had a small theatre within walking distance, they had Loonie Tuesdays, then Toonie Tuesdays. But sadly they folded. Netflix is our video store now.

It's not "free" you pay good money for the car with some features in it. Navigation is a feature and if it's included with the car, then you've paid for it. This I think is what pisses (most of) us off. They get paid for the stuff AND try to shive ads down our throats. Resist, vote with your wallets and maybe it'll send a message.

I rarely go to the movies. When I go, it's to the $3 movie theatre or when T-Mobile has a $4 ticket promo on a movie I want to see. Otherwise, I watch Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Haven't had a tv since I was an undergrad, except to hook up and play Wii. No cable, except for Internet. Always use ad-blockers on browsers.

I don't like phone spam, either. Have T-Mobile's Scam Block and Scam ID on, and I google any number that doesn't leave a message. Those get blocked and blacklisted. Same with numbers that leave messages that aren't for me.

Had to change my old phone number last year because an Illinois registered sex offender called Lafayette Riley decided to use it. Real nasty piece of trash. T-Mobile was nice about it, didn't charge me and hasn't reassigned the number.

Ok, so we have a more "enlightened" demographic here on PC, but more and more people are opting out of the environments that shove ads at them. It is just human nature to avoid unpleasantness. Ads are unpleasant and the sooner the PR people reailze it, the sooner they'll get batter at reaching their audiences better. Seriously, that Chemlawn flyer in my mailbox is really a waist of really good quality paper and printing costs. I have not treated my lawn EVER and never will. Same goes for the electronic BS. I will fight it where and when I can and ignore it when I can't block it and will never EVER patronize the more obnoxious advertisers. And will turn people who are effected by me off those products and services.

We disconnected the cable, about 4 years back. Then I got to missing the news, looked into DIY antennas. Ended up making quite a few Grey Hoverman antennas. Here's one link:

You're typical multi-screen theater is a strange environment.

Where else does tub of Popcorn and a large soda cost nearly $20?
Seriously, I was just at a theater where a large pop was $7.
They do realize that just outside in the real world, soda is cheap?
And where else does a start time of 7:30, really mean the movie starts at 8:10?

I still enjoy the theater "movie" experience, but with all the competing platforms today?
I have a hard time justifying the cost vs. experience.

They can't keep the doors open with cheap refreshments, because they don't get to keep enough of the ticket revenue. Much of that gets passed up as royalties. That leaves the overpriced snacks as their bread and butter. Ads too.

And yes, that is part of the reason they are having difficulties competing with other platforms.

I'd like ads for places with or within short walking distance of a charger.

Studio Movie Grill isn't too bad. You can get beer priced about the same as your local bar, and they have some decent craft brews. Food can be pricy, just choose wisely and go in about 20 minutes after the advertised start time to miss the ads and catch the trailers.

I listen to NPR. It doesn't really have ads, but is supported by listeners, foundations, and other interested parties.

So they'll say "KERA is supported by you, our members, and the John T and Katherine P MacArthur Foundation, providing grants for a greener, more just and (forgot this part) future." at a local break. National NPR has a lot more iterations, and you don't become a member, you just join your local stations. Or your current and former local stations.

Is the CBC similar? I've heard some good non-news programs from them in the past.
