"Low key battery" warning came up on the MID when I turned off the car after 3+ years of ownership.

I looked up the instructions, and replaced the CR2032 lithium-metal coin cell with the same Panasonic cell; so, everything in the car is still OEM. ;)

I put transparent tape on the tips of the small screwdrivers so that they wouldn't scratch the key. I had to use a smaller one to pry the cell off than the one I used for the prying the cover off.

Replacing the key cell would have been easy, except that the holding plastic tabs are ridiculously hard and rigid. I was worried that they would break off if I followed the instructions in the manual and pried the battery off with a screwdriver, but they didn't; so, it was all good at the end.

I see you explain again why you don’t want a battery monitor. A third user fob would have kept the originals pristine.

Never. You can get the Japanese-made OEM Panasonic lithium-metal coin cells for cheap on eBay.

My second key with the tag is in pristine, never-used condition. These days they give you only one key.

Is the second fob in the original little plastic bag as it comes with from Japan? Where do they get those dirt cheap Ebay “made in Japan” Panasonic batteries? They would have to pay way less.
Thats terrible the gen 5 only gets one key. Im sure glad I got the 4 that gets two keys. Fobs.

Yep, it is still in its OEM Japanese plastic bag with a label with a Japanese letter.

I got the 03/2031-expiration-date Panasonic CR2032 coin cells from eBay for about 50¢ a while back, but they seem to be going for about a buck at the moment. They are needed in a variety of devices.

You know the PHEV-battery prismatic cells are also made by Panasonic, right?

Right, but do you know the 2032 aren’t imposters for 50 cents?

I have bought the same for years. I suppose they can look real. Something is true if we believe it. The new George Castanza world we live in. Or is it if we believe it, it’s true.
I looked at the one I have left in the package with 2030 exp date. Panasonic made in Indonesia.

Autozone has one Eveready for $8.99 or $10 with tax. My daughter went there last week to get the fob battery replaced CR1632. Not an issue every few years.
A retailer of substance buys the batteries from the manufacturer, chain of custody. Ebay is definitely a question mark. One needs to ask how they get things so cheap.

OEM “Industrial” Panasonic CR2032 that came with the car on the left, 39.7¢ eBay retail-packaged Panasonic CR2032 on the right.

In my experience, there is little difference between industrial and retail cells if any. In fact, retail cells are probably of slightly higher quality if at all.

The letters in Panasonic are closer together on the one on the right, and all the stamping is thicker. The figures have differences, like the head and object are not spaced the same distance away from the body. Not that it proves anything. I saw online people showing how to test them.
You say retail package. I bought injectors that were in perfect Toyota boxes and every detail on injectors was perfect, except the holes in the injection nozzle were not as cleanly made. I tested, all were under the ohm spec. Got money back. Seller disappeared after a while. There is a reason things can be sold for a small fraction of the regular price. How are they getting them, shipping them, and making a profit? Theft from stores may be one.

Yeah, that's because they are different cells—industrial vs. retail. The word "Industrial" wouldn't fit if they used identical fonts.

Actually no, they have the same room, just the 3v is up higher on the one on the right. Not related to the differences, and the people are different. The letters and lines are all just fatter but take up the same space by being closer.

Well, in that case, follow @bisco's advice above.
