Has anyone changed their head unit on the base model Prius?

How would one do that? Given the touchscreen, wouldn't that involve an extensive remanufacture of the dash? What would be gained?

Previous generation Prius have had touch screen head units and have been replaced by aftermarket systems. It's not as extensive as you think.

My installer is currently waiting for approved parts to be ready, but I'm planning on getting a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX installed soon.

It's worth noting that JDM Priuses ship with a (200 mm wide, I think - that's what Toyota usually does anyway) double DIN cage (in ALL trim levels), and the head units are a dealer-installed option.

And, looks like there's a double DIN dash kit available in the US now: AAMP First to Release Aftermarket Dash Kit for 2016 Toyota Prius - 12 Volt News - Fresh Industry News Since 199412 Volt News – Fresh Industry News Since 1994

The Gen 4's dash is really not strange at all in aftermarket head unit terms, so it can take things like that easily. It's not like a lot of modern cars, where you have to replace the HVAC controls too, and have dead displays, and unsightly lumps, and such.

So I've been talking to an installer and they mentioned two things:

    1. Backup camera voltage. I want to keep my backup camera and they said there is not an existing harness and they would have to splice wires to retain the factory backup camera.
    2. They were concerned that if they connected a steering wheel control unit that they weren't sure if I could only reprogram the buttons on the left side that control the radio or if I would lose access to the buttons on the right side that control the adaptive cruise control/car multifunction display etc. They said they would refund my money if this was the case and not continue with the install. They said on some Toyota/Lexus, you lose all other steering wheel controls and on other they can isolate the radio ones. They are going to use an idatalink maestro rr.

Just wanted to post this to see if anyone had any thoughts/experience with this. I've been waiting to pull the trigger as I'm not looking to become the guinea pig with my fancy new car.

There are vehicle settings the factory unit controls. Will after market units expose this functionality? Will the left steering wheel buttons work? Would voice commands still work with the button?

All these are issues I would look at closely before going after market (but I'm not for now ;))

I had my head unit changed out. Got the pioneer app radio to use with my android with full mirroring and touchscreen functions. Was able to keep the existing backup camera but still waiting on an update to the module for the steering wheel controls. I'll post a better picture during the daylight but here's one from today.

I'm doing the same next week. Going with the Pioneer SPH-DA120 that I had in my 2009 Camry. I'll post updates as I go as far as controls, mounting kit etc.

The cost was about $260 with the mount and the backup camera adapter. The unit is an App Radio 2 (SPH-DA210). I took it out of my 2013 Prius.

Can you share what adapter you used? I'm assuming that this adapter prevented you from splicing any wires, correct? Also, can you share what changes this caused to the steering wheel controls?

Did you lose any of the car settings or car info screens with these head units? Some of the car settings are only available from the factory head unit, not the MID up top.

If there are setting and screens that came up on the OEM head unit I honestly don't remember what they were.

Can someone check and see what screens use the OEM deck and how to access them?

I know one of the settings was if you want to unlock just the drivers door or drivers and passenger door

Were you able to keep the steering wheel controls and the backup camera?
