I just received (11/23/2012) a notification from Toyota:

"Toyota has received a limited number of reports from high mileage 2004 to certain 2009 model year Prius vehicles regarding the Instrument Panel Combination Meter not illuminating when the vehicle's ignition is turned "ON". This condition may occur in certain cold weather conditions and is identified during vehicle start-up."

The warranty enhancement covers this failure for a period of the longer of 9 years from first use (no mileage limit) or before September 30, 2013.

This is a known problem that has been discussed on PC and repaired for several members by PC member pEEf in northern California at a reasonable cost.

I was at the dealership today to have work done and was told that there was NO VIN specific recall on the CM. Is there an official letter that could be downloaded to verify this or should I call TMS directly? This has been a problem with my car over the past 2 years and is not strictly limited to cold weather.

Here's one that everyone might make everyone sit up and take notice regarding the combination meter enhanced warranty:

I e-mailed Toyota when I, too, grew impatient waiting for a reply (it has been 4 days with nothing but an automated response that included an incident number). When I called to follow up on the e-mail, I was told that there were two open recalls on my car which I already knew about. Upon further investigation, the rep found the assigned ID (ZTV) for the Enhanced warranty on the combination meter. I explained that my CM has been intermittently going out for the past 2 years and there is a difference of 945 miles between the odometer reading and the actual mileage.

Although the VIN of my 2005 Prius was not in the range of what was listed for the enhanced warranty, the service rep indicated that he could get the combination meter replaced free of charge under Toyota's customer support program. I was given a case number and told that the customer relations manager at the local dealership would be notified in the morning (11/30). The customer relations manager would then have 3 business days to get in touch with me to set up an appointment to get the work done at no cost. Finally - a bit of good news!

No, mileage is not recorded when the CM is not working. This morning was the third consecutive morning that the CM was out at start up. This should not be difficult to replicate for the dealer. Now up to 1,033 added to my odometer reading. Easy to keep track of the mileage with a routine commute (44 miles each way) but not too safe trying to guess the vehicle speed.

UPDATE: Received a message Monday morning from the local dealership regarding the combination meter. After returning the call, the service advisor insisted that there was NO "enhanced warranty" on the combination meter. This was after the service department had received an e-mail from Toyota's customer support asking them to replace them CM under the terms of the enhanced warranty!

I downloaded and printed the official letter sent to Toyota dealerships as well as a copy of the letter that was sent to owners whose vehicles are included in this campaign (I have not received this letter yet). The service advisor still had no clue and would not schedule the vehicle to be repaired until he "spoke with his Prius specialist".

After my second call to customer support, Toyota HQ contacted the dealership and told them that my vehicle was to be repaired under the terms listed in the enhanced warranty. Period.

The dealership called back and set up an appointment for Jan 7 - 9 (loaner car to be provided by the dealership). It's quite embarrassing for a customer to be more informed than the Toyota employees! I made this quite clear when I called customer support. Overall, customer support is A+... unfortunately, the employees at the dealership are another story...

Thanks again to folks at Prius Chat for keeping the rest of us informed!
