I was at a red light on the right (slow) lane in the morning on a large road; 3 straight lanes and 2 left turn lanes in each direction. At the time, the left turns had the green light as I see cars from the opposite side turning left, moving from my left A-pillar to my right. The left A-pillar was perfectly blocking the left turn lane from the opposite side. As my light turned green, I started accelerating normal fast-ish. At this acceleration, my A-pillar was perfectly in line between my eyes and one last red light left turn runner such that I couldn't see the car at all until the car was basically in front of my car. This made me stop nearly abruptly with a car length of room to spare. He was turning really fast too. Basically, the large Prius A-pillar plus the synchronized movement of the two cars didn't allow me to see the car, even with his headlight on! I don't have TSS on my car and that was one scary moment.

So he was "running" his green arrow? I hate those guys; cops should do a campaign targeting them.

Yep, unfortunately the side curtain airbags in the A-pillars make them pretty thick and create blindspots that can hide entire cars.

I've had some close calls too. I try to be more careful about peering around the A-pillars when pulling out.

Used to catch out fastjet jockeys back in the day with farm buying consequences. The solution for them then was to keep their head moving around inside the cockpit to minimise the blindspots. Sounds simple (kiss) and may look daft to others, but it sure works.

Oh no. I'm glad you are safe and unharmed. I recall one car company floating an idea of semi transparent A pillars to improve visibility. It makes sense as a concept, doesn't it?

Many cars have gone this way, the A Pillar provides a lot of the safety structure - the PRIUS isn't as bad as my Fiesta, but, yes, sometimes I crane my head on some intersections to make sure.

Ah I see. So airbags is the reason for the pillar size. :sleep:I definitely will have to move my head around from now on to check.

We go counter-clockwise around this low speed 180 degree turn on occasion, and where you're headed is right in the middle of the left side A-Pillar. You're constantly moving your head left-right, both to check your direction and be on alert for oncoming cars.

Nope, I'm in Vancouver USA. My car was built before April 2016 so it doesn't do metric.

Have to say the best fish and chips I ever tasted was at Legal Sea Foods in Boston, MA.

Fish & Chips - Menu - Legal Sea Foods - Boston

Regrettably age, health and immense insurance cost conspire to prohibit further transatlantic travel for me, but thanks for the advice. (y)

Especially if he asks for delivery  :D
That reminds me of a M*A*S*H episode where they order barbecue, I believe, from the US and have it shipped to Korea.
