    Ideas ?
Yes, a search should turn up a LOT of them.
Alas, the owner seems unable or unwilling to fix the problem.
It goes in streaks, probably depending on the server load at the time.
Just live with it; it's been going on for a L O N G time.

Also should have stated more clearly:
Just try again, whatever you were doing.
Often it will work a few seconds later.
If it fails several times in a row, just come back later.

I also experience this cut-outs, they're almost permanent between 8:00 to 16:00 UTC. When trying to refresh the forum in this time period and the error is not displayed, sometimes the CSS is not loaded.

    Yeah, it happens to me.
But when I see "Try Again Later" I mentally substitute "Get A Life Loser" and take it as motivation to get up and do something different.
    So I've found it helpful.

Ok, so it's not my computer. I have been having the same problem lately.
"An unexpected database error occurred. Please try again later." error message appears constantly freezing the screen. Refreshing the page several times usually fix the problem, but it is very annoying. :(

I did some reading. Seems to be a common issue with XenForo. Could be an issue with InnoDB. Could be simply a hard drive partition is full on the server. Could be a shared hosting problem and it needs to be moved to VPS hosting. Can't tell without CPanel access.
