This design flaw stranded me at a campsite last Summer. I had left the hatch open too long - totally my fault - and there wasn't enough power left to close it. The parks personnel were under strict instructions not to boost hybrids, because of a recent expensive incident, though they were helpful in contacting BCAA. Who took over 12 hours to show up, charged me extra because of a short stint on a gravel road, and complained that I was using too much of his battery pack by turning things on to get the engine to start up. When I got home, having to cut the holiday short, I cancelled my less-than-helpful BCAA membership of about 25 years, and bought a booster pack. The DeWalt model I chose also functions as a USB charger for phones and such, so I won't be stranded again.

Our '10 has a switchable hatch light: Toyota relentlessly stripping stuff.

I wish more had switches though, we have the goofy footwell lights, door ajar, they're on.

shouldn't the light turn itself off after a while?

That would make so much more sense. It's too small to be of much use anyway - maybe that tells me the solution. I could remove it....

I'd take an on/off switch over an automatic shut-off: the latter seems overly complicated, and prone to turn off at inopportune times.
