Another gas gauge question, I hope not what you think

yes, with the bladder, there is no way of knowing how much gas is in the car.

 

here's the problem, you don't know what three pips mean, so you don't know how much gas is in the tank after you filled it. something more than 6.32 to be sure.
maybe try driving to the blinking pip, and see how much she takes.

 

if the bladder is working properly, i think it would represent 1.2 gallons or so. and for many that is the case. i never had an issue with my '04 and '08. but for those whose bladders act up, for whatever reason, odd things can happen, like driving a hundred miles on the first pip, or suddenly having 2 or 3 pips disappear. or not being able to put much gas in the car.
you have to do your own testing. watch the odometer and see how many miles between each pip.
and winter can be different from summer as well.

 

gen 3 (starts 2010 in the u.s.) has no bladder, and outside n/a, there never was one. much less problems.

 

The :"guess" gauge is not linear. The first PiP can respresent up to 150 miles, after that the PiP's go away between every 20-30 miles or so. Seems to me the software works in a way that does not respond to sloshing around. Once you lose a bar you don't get that back until refill.

 

the 3 gallon rule is only for when the tank has been run dry. and even that isn't perfect as my '08 started right up after 2 gallons.

 

again, some will and some won't. ou have to experiment. try one, then 2, then three.

 

Fill the gas tank (bladder) drive around while or till three bars (pipes) are fine and fill up. Divide by three and estimate. Or divide gallons by actual miles and each bar represents that much on average. No real science unless the car is on a roller with consistent air and temp.
