ok, have done a ton of these things and we all know it helps a lot right? well, on my 2006, i pulled grill blocking for two tanks and looks to have lost about 8 mpg. now this car rarely hits the freeway, so its mostly short trips, in town, etc. one way work commute just over 6 miles. top speeds 35 mph.

but stats on the last 3 tanks with first (zero grill blocking) and last (100% top, 50% bottom) and middle tank (100 % top and bottom grill block

date miles mfd mpg cal gal cost gal pump cal mpg $/g
    1 11/12/2009 376.6 40.8 9.23 27 9.856 38.21
    2 12/10/09 528.3 45.5 11.61 30.5 1 1.140 47.42
    3 01/02/10 347.1 40 8.68 24.5 9.043 38.38

on the table the last column is the calculated mileage per the pencil and paper method. as you can see, the "mfd mileage" is well within the normal variation so tank mileage probably valid. the similarities between the tanks without 100% grill block is more than a bit eerie
back to 100% grill blocking. will definitely post the next tank

What was the weather temperature during those timeframes?

winter formula gas started Oct 1 around here so that is why i did it on that tank. tank started 10/15 but the first one was very warm. first part of the tank, it was in the mid 60's in the afternoon, getting to normal weather for last 2 weeks.

on the middle tank, the mileage was around 53 mpg but temps dropped into the teens on the last 4 days dropping to what it ended up with including two days with morning lows of 6 and 8º. both of those days, we lost more than a MPG

on the last tank, it was mostly colder than normal. other than the last week which went to about upper 40's for highs, upper 30's for lows.

overall, because the tanks last so long, the real weather differences are probably balanced out fairly well. i really hesitated to use the first tank because the weather ended up turning so late, but the numbers dont lie.

we will see how the next tank turns out.

this will probably affect next SPM tank, but just filled up 2010. mileage bumped 2 mpg due to pineapple express weather we had for about 10 days.

Try 0% top, as the inverter cooling section is at top on the GenIII versus on the bottom on the GenII. At your low speeds, there should be no significant aero penalty from the blocking material, right?

ok, last tank figures are in... weather did not really cooperate as temps are headed towards warmest Jan ever. highs for 85% of Jan was in 50's. so might consider posting next tank as well. one thing for sure, not removing any blocking

    miles; 426 one bar
    MFD reading; 48.4
    gas pumped;9.047
    pump cal; 47.1

**see OP for prev 3 tanks with and without blocking@!!**
