another victim of the "too tight oil filter cap"

    Here is the filter wrench that I've used on my Tacoma. It grabs the filter and gets tighter as you attempt to loosen the filter. If this doesn't work to remove the filter, I don't know what will!

    You're using the wrong wrench. That one is for removing metal filter cartridges only.

    Just tried to a DIY oil change for the first time on my 2012 Prius. The filter casing was so tight! I had to dish out my 1/2" drive bar for extra leverage.

    I had multiple problems. I had to lift the car high enough to allow the maintenance door to open. The worst part was when my new CTA 2485 oil cap wrench got stuck on the end of the case and won't come off! After trying several things, I resorted to hammering the CTA cap while the cartridge was on the car. I finally got it off with some force.

    Is the CTA 2485 a bad cap wrench? The CTA wrench looks like it is made out of flexible aluminum, it is not brittle and somewhat bendable. Why did this stupid thing get stuck to the case? Maybe I should buy the Assmaucher instead. Any opinions?

    I just replaced my oil filter housing cap and I'm worried about the clip as it was hard to remove. Actually impossible for me..

    Just concerned about removing the oil filter next to oil change. I've never had to deal with that clip before as it was not on the last oil filter housing cap that I had.

    ^ Do you mean the clip in the centre of this pic? It's not meant to be removed at oil changes. And it in no way impedes removal or install of the cap.

    It's somewhat akin to the appendix in humans: no one's quite clear WHAT it's supposed to do. I suspect it was added to appease a nervous junior engineer: it does absolutely nothing. Here's a video I did (with the housing in the above pic), to demonstrate it's total ineffectiveness.

    Did you notice how hard it was to get past the first notch????
    It's designed to keep it from coming loose if it wasn't tightened....

    The oil filter won't know the difference, with the OEM Honda filter socket. They're about $30 though. But last forever.

    Toyota, Honda and Mazda (there may be more) seem to have come to a consensus on filter size, small blessing.

    It adds, if anything, a small feeling of detent there. Might be all it takes to assuage the engineers' fears of the thing working loose ... but normally, the way the O ring embiggens during a typical oil change interval, nobody's likely to notice that light detent amid the grunting to get the cap loose overall.

    That detent thingie was already missing from my car when I bought it used. I'm not sorry. No way will that cap ever work loose, if the correct O-ring is in place.
