While I haven't made it to the movie yet, if this brings back the old excitement at Cons it will all be worth it. As a Con goer since the early days of rough-and-ready, non-commercialized cons in the 1970's I miss those days. I know that (in spite of being able to reset the clock in a movie) we can't go back to those exciting beginnings. If this brings back some of the fandom and displaces some of the commercialism at Cons then I'm all for it. I might even go back to a Con again!

I have to admit, when I first heard that there was going to be a new StarTrek and it would be with a younger version of the first crew I was worried. I had been hoping that there would be either a tie in to one of the other series or something completly new.

How would Pike be included? Would they rewrite everything or leave the basic premise?

When I heard it was Abrams, or at least he was involved, I relaxed a little - some of his TV shows are just brilliant, so hoped some of this would pass on to the film. Then I saw some of the cast and back to worrying....

Having read this thread, I was pleased with the comments and reviews and despite the dodgy trailers decided to see it. Naturally I read the basic premise of the plot on Wikipedia first (I know it's gonna ruin it a little but I like to know what a films about).

Watching the film I have to admit I was really impressed. Yes there are alot of changes and huge gaps (anyone for a sequel or two?) but I found it really refreshing. A proper movie and not an extra long tv episode or the stand alone movies that have been the latest forays.

Some of the casting was just superb. Who ever would have thought that Zachery "Sylar" Quinto would make such a good Spock, Pine would be a refreshing retake on Kirk or that Simon Pegg would actually be able to do a reasonable Scottish accent all the way through!!!

For me the Uhura character was unused, there was a lot more that could have been done - although I suppose that this ties in the same with the origional series. The only real downer for me was Karl Urbans McCoy - OK sometimes for me he's a hit and miss actor but I found that he seemed a little wooden although I did warm up to him nearer the end.

The best comic turns were done by Checkov (apologies for the misspelling) and his slightly over stereotypicical faux-russianesque accent , annoyingly funny and a nice homage to the origional, and Scotties assisant(?).

All in all WOW. A real must for Trekkers, Trekkies, Fans and newcomers.

I'm missing something. The only post above I saw was considerate of those that had not seen the movie and totally devoid of any FHoP aspects.

Of the new cast I thought the Bones actor was the best at capturing that special something we loved about McCoy.

I'm a big Star Trek fan...

I liked the movie a lot. I think it was well written, visually very good looking, the casting was excellent, and I loved all the little winks to the Trekkies JJ Abrams (who is a trekkie himself) put in.

I was worried about it too, but I'm happy. Its different than any of the previous Trek movies which is a bittersweet thing, the epic battle between good and evil, the overtures towards duty and family aren't there. The entire storyline is a lot less "deep" than we're used to, but lets be honest that approach just wasn't working so I don't blame them for taking a new approach.

    I'll definately see it again.

PS, you aren't a real trekkie if you can't spell "Romulan", "Spock", "Uhura" or "Checkov" ;)

I think a little googling around will show you that Abrams is/was not a trekkie.

Burn! You are totally right LOL. What the hell is wrong with me?

Now I have to turn in my trekkie card lol

As for Abrams, I had read he was. Plus, if you watch Fringe and Lost there are a good many Star Trek references...although you're right he's quoted all over the place as saying he isn't.

    I'm just batting zero today...

His friends on the project, the screen writers, were definitely trekkies from way back.

That could be why there are so many references on Lost and Fringe too, a lot of the same people.

We may see the movie again tonight, I'm interested to see what I think of it the second time around.

LOL, that pretty much nailed it. Anyone looking for deep original plot or meaningful character development should possibly rent Deep Throat instead. ;) But really, this IS the best Star Trek ever, from a tech point of view. Fun and never boring. What a long way we've come even from a few years ago with the special effects. Saw it on IMAX last night (though there were not any bits that actually used that tech that I noticed). My 2 major plot complaints are (1) when are the scifi writers gonna stop using black holes as a time travel device? where is the science in this fiction? and (2) the world as we know it is being threatened with utter annihilation and Old Spock decides not to come along and help, because he thinks Young Spock and Jim should have a bonding experience? I mean yeah, we didn't need old Spock through the whole movie, and it made for a funny bit at the end, but does seem rather illogical and stretch credulity (unlike the rest of the plot?:D).

So what years was it supposed to be when Kirk drove that 1960's corvette off the cliff? I know it was Iowa, but was it 2018 or many years latter?? Why would it still have an ICE when everything else is some other enrgy source other than gasoline.

Reminds me of that Rush song Red Barchetta.

Well the U.SS. Kelvin was destroyed on Stardate 2233.04. That is the date of Kirks birth in the NEW alternate Timeline. In the scene with the Corvette young Kirk looks about 14 ish?, as the car is speeding down the road and the car phone rings and Kirk answers it, it's his Stepdad. There is a short audio clip, from his stepfather, saying you get my ANTIQUE car back here now or.... Kirk hangs up the phone, hits the IPOD. That was approx Stardate 2247 something, there is not a definite date set for that scene. He entered the Academy in 2255, 8 years later. While it sounded like a gas engine, that was never really shown, implied perhaps, who knows, a Mr. Fusion Energy Generator, with a Corvette sound chip...Great for warning the future blind pedestrians!
    Who knows, its a movie!

    Hi All,

Just got back from the new Star Trek movie. Its a good movie. I rarely go to movies. I went to this one, and am not disappointed. I liked Alias (the TV Show) and that was another JJ Abrams work.

I did not like the distruction of Vulcan. But, on reflection I see this as a post 9-11 thing. The hero's do not always win. Star Trek always has had things take from the present world injected into it. Vulcan is the World Trade Center. For younger people not familar with the original Star Trek, it wont phase them. It will make it more real to life. This is probably why they did it.

As a traditional trekkie type person I thought the plot was weak. I was predicting things after Vulcan was distroyed. This probably wont make a difference to sub-21 year old viewers however. Which, with the change of the time-line, is probably what this movie was for.

I finally saw it today. I thought it was great, but I agree that the optimistic spirit of the original series was not quite there.

Afterward my husband said to me, "Leonard Nimoy is dead, right? I thought that was really amazing how they got him into the movie anyway."

After seeing it I wonder at what stardate they finally get past using swords for weapons. Then again, since 99.99% of all phaser blasts miss......
