California is in a drought. I haven't personally washed my car in almost 5 years because the car dealership washed it after each 5,000 mile maintenance (about every 4 months for me). About 2 years ago, the dealership stopped washing the cars due to our drought. Thus, my car hasn't been washed in 2 years, and you can imagine the crud caked on. A couple of weeks ago, it was raining in Los Angeles so I drove around for 15 minutes to get it as clean as I could. Didn't work very well. I was going to take it to the car wash (whichever kind), but I could probably use a lot less water at home to wash my car.

What's everybody in California doing to keep their car clean? And not waste water.

I might have to break down and do something drastic.

Run it through the car wash when you get gas? That's what I normally do.

Dude, wash the car!! Don't over think it. wash the car when it needs it. So. Cal will not run dry because of you washing your car. if you want to save water stop watering your lawn, take shorter showers

I still don't like running it through the car wash, whether after getting gas or not. But at least you're OK with doing it.

    Mike

About a year ago I got into a discussion with our condo people about our lawn. I said to stop watering it and let it die. I ran into a lot of resistence. I said to paint the dirt green or put in artificial grass or rocks. Anything. I think I've limited all of my water usage to its lowest amount, including not washing my car. But now, I think I have to wash my car, as it is so dirty. I don't think telling the 18 million people of the Los Angeles area to keep washing their cars without thinking of the drought is a good idea.

Wax/wax fall and spring, and maybe a couple of washings in between each of those. It's a good to have a trigger style nozzle on the hose, the kind that shuts off as soon as you let go.

But I never water the lawn, sometimes have hand-me-down baths, neglect to flush the john sometimes.

the car washes around here recycle the water, with a serious filtration system. i don't wash my car though, i'd rather water the lawn. the lawn is good for the environment, the car is not.

A single 5 gallon bucket of soapy water can wash an entire car no problem. That's less than most showers. And a big carwash generally recycles about 98% of the water they use.

Although rain may be far and in between, throw on a rain jacket and break out the soap next time it rains. Wash the car, then pull it in the garage or under an overpass and dry it... Just like the kid on the Prius commercial!

Yes, these are the types of posts I make when my wife is visiting her sick grandmother and I am alone on a Friday night...

What sort of answer did you expect to get here?

I'm very water conscious. I've been like this since early 2000s before this whole drought started. One of my homes runs off a well. I have a 5 gallon bucket in shower to catch run off for my plants, don't always flush toliet unless it's shit, only water my plants when it's past 6, have bucket strategic put around the house to catch water off gutters, when i wash up i get wet then turn off the water then soap up then rinse i probably have water on less than 30 seconds and much there's much more I do. Btw I don't need do this, I have 4 homes if I wanted waste water I can easily.

If rain did not do the job then you leave it dirty or wash it. Or you can drive to another state where water isn't a problem or drive into a lake or spit into a bucket till you have enough to wash your car.

Get those 5 gallon buckets from lowes and use it when you wash up and when you get enough wash your car. I hope your OK with this.

isn't there some kind of dry wash system now Mike can use? I'm with Mike though, in sympathy, I am not washing.

Our motto here at Prius Chat: "Clean mind....clean car....take your pick! "
He's gone for the clean mind option.

Mike, I'd break the dry spell at least once in a while, get the underbody, suspension and wheel wells cleaned thoroughly.

    Thanks for the sentiment.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I'll feel slightly better when I wash my car, probably next weekend. But I really like that Prius commercial when the kid gets to wash the Prius when it rains. I should have done that when it rained.
