Thanks tag, I didn't realize that decrypter did it all. So I guess I'll send for one of the dl drives you listed above. The NEC seems to have some good reviews on that site.

And to those that are keeping track, my nav version is 3.3 and I had ordered my wonder car in April and picked it up on August 30th.

From earlier posts, it looks like this nav system is now up to version 4.1. But if it's not less than $60 or so, I'll wait. I find the nav system as it is, with all it's problems, quite acceptable.

Unless the drive contains something unusual electronics-wise, a grand for the drive and the disk is an enormous ripoff. I mean, that would be circa $700 for the drive alone and, from what I can determine, the drive is just a lousy, stinking DVD-ROM drive........available from many online resellers for around 40 bucks.

OTOH, maybe it's some super-duper, shock-resistant, bullet-proof drive or the like.

Blank double layer dvds cost about $8 to 15 apiece!!! So I think I may be holding off on getting a new DVD writer for awhile.

As for the cost of the updated DVD for the nav. Does anyone remember the prices of pre-recorded VHS tapes when they first came out? I remember there was a dual pricing structure. VHS tapes of movies that were quite popular went for about $29, but less popular VHS movies went for $79.

The theory behind the pricing was that only video rental stores would buy the less popular videos and they would have to buy them at any price to stay in business. So they picked the $79 fee for them.

The $29 price for the more popular movies was done to help "regular people" afford them so they might add them to their collections. Each price was determined on the basis of "what they were capable of getting", not on the basis of "what would be a fair markup".

This is how pricing is done in business. It's not done on what is fair. It's done on "what we can get without shooting ourselves in the foot for the future".

Although I'm sure it's true that they would sell more "updates" at $49 or so, they probably figure that most people won't upgrade at any price, at least not for the next 5 years of so. So rather than price them at $50 for a market that they figure isn't there, they price them at $300 (or $900) for a smaller market that they know IS there.

    Just a thought.

They're just now starting to drop in price. Rima is currently selling them for $7/ea while Meritline has some Riteks for around $6/ea after rebate. Of course, you're going to pay $10/ea at the likes of Best Buy. Regardless, not really worth it just to do something like back up your DVD movie collection.

When those new -R DL drives start hitting the streets, blank media prices should come down rather quickly. After all, I was paying $1.50/ea for top quality SL blanks (Maxell) not more than 5 months ago. Now, they're on sale quite often for $.40-$.50/ea.

I wonder if the Controller is the DVD reader???

    $794.91 is kinda pricey for a DVD-ROM.

the controller is for the MFD as it's different from the standard one. I also forgot to include the steering wheel as it's different also and the bezel for the MFD as it's also different. The navigation computer is the unit under the seat which reads the DVD.

I believe the instructions are in the NAV manual.

    It's rather simple, though:

The unit is under the driver's seat. You'll see a rectangular cover with two tabs; push the tabs down and remove the cover. You should then see the outside of the tray that holds the DVD. To the left of the tray there is a tab that you slide to the left. The DVD will then slide out.

I can buy a brand new upgrade disc - the new version - for $230 bucks with sales tax. FYI!

    v. 3.3 delivered 8/20/04--and when I complained 2 weeks later, I was told I could have a free upgrade when one became available. Obviously, the time has come to "cash in."

    Dear Alan,

Thanks...I've been reading about this and obviously I will ask for the free upgrade. I just wanted other to know the dealer did say I would get a free one and I would have held him to it, rather than pay.
