I've been looking into programming a Smart Key using a virgin key fob from eBay. I thought about programming it myself using techstream since it would save me a little bit of money plus I would have a diagnostic tool to use afterwards.

My question is, how much is it, where can I download and is the software and mini-VCI cable all that is needed to get it working?

Also, if something goes wrong with programming the Smart Key, what is the possibility of screwing up the programming of my other key and render it useless?

2012. I did some more research on techstream software and it looks like it was more expensive than I thought. I think you can get a day trial for under $60 but the full registered version is over $1000. I thought I read a thread somewhere on these forums about someone programming a smart key with techstream and the mini-VCI cable for a cost less than having a dealer program it.

Most who have the techstream software grab it through other methods so all it costs in the mini VCI cable.

I see, I wasn't sure if the software requires registration or a keygen passcode in order to be fully functional. I would be disappointed to spend the time and money trying to program a smart key only to find it would be cheaper to have a dealer or locksmith do it for me.

I've used my tech steam to program a used remote to a '12 PIP. It needed a seedcode to complete the process. This is a security code that only licensed tech & or lock smiths have (requires background chk).

Not sure if have a virgin remote would make a difference.

I believe programming a virgin key fob doesn't require the seed code. Did you have reprogram your other key fob too or can it keep the same programming already on it?

For a brand new fob it is NOT necessary a seed code
