I did this a few years back:

    upload_2018-12-30_19-16-44.png

I did it in AutoCAD, but it works just fine with pencil, paper and a ruler. Only thing, I can't remember how I did it. My son turned me on to it; unfortunately he can't remember either.

Was trying to show the technique to one of the grand sons, but was stumped.

I recall it's very easy: you start with a rectangle, draw an arbitrary diagonal line, then progressive lines, following some rules.

Not sure how to do the above but I had our 7 and 6 year olds at the local science museum yesterday and they had a weighted pendulum with a OEM on the end of an arm that would oscillate in a way that would make various patterns depending on how you moved the table as the pen was moving:).

Kept them busy for a good bit of the morning(y).

Yeah I'm trying to reverse-engineer it: colored-coded the outermost in each progression (magenta), then worked my way in a bit. Far as I can see, you do an initial lattice, 3, 4, or whatever sided polygons, filling the rectantular frame, then just start working your way in, with an arbitrary offset from each corner. That's why it works good on paper too, nothing exact, yet the outcome is kinda spectacular.

Having colors kinda diminishes it, you see the pattern.

Here's a hand drawn, first step laying out the boundaries, then fill in of one boundary.

Somebody nearby fashioned a fence using similar principles, similar to the arbitrary first step. It's both devilishly clever and dead simple at the same time. I'll snap a pic next time we're walking the dog past that place, update here. (y)

Here’s some dead simple fencing that we did last year at this time:):

    8DD9F1C6-105A-4D11-9570-04860ED69B01.jpeg 0F689F9F-BA79-4DBF-955A-6EF03B120599.jpeg

Nothing complex, just 103 feet of it:eek:.

Only major challenge was the ground being rock and having to get the 60 pound jack hammer to dig the posts holes out:oops:.

Turned out good though and the wife was happy with the result(y).

    Looks nice.

About 15 years ago we had to replace our back fence damaged in a big windstorm. We sank steel posts in concrete with flat steel crossbeams on both sides near the top, the middle and near the bottom. A 2x6 instead of a 2x4 laid down for additional lateral support on the top. We used self tapping screws to put the wooden slats on both sides. The end result is a fence that looks similar to yours on both sides to the delight of our neighbors and holds up like a brick wall in bad weather. You'd never know it has metal in it. If a wooden slat breaks for any reason it's very easy to replace it by just screwing a new one into the same place.

I redesigned ours a bit as the previous designed ensured the continued support of a fencing company would occur every 10 years:cool:.

We used pressure treated 4x4’s and dig down 20 inches where the previous fence wasn’t dug that low nor was pressure treated lumber used:(.

We used metal angle brackets to lock the 2x4 supports to the 4x4’s rather than “toe nailing” the supports in as it’ll last longer;).

Then used screws as well rather than nails for similar reasons:).

As the slats fail, they are easily replaced and sourced;).

Sounds like our minds think alike (y).

Looks nice and definitely more custom :).

The fence in the background was similar to the pattern we had before I modified it. The bottom rots out and then the slats flap in the breeze:cool:.

How’d the drawing finish up last night:whistle:?

Post #9, second pic. Or you saw that, and it doesn't look very "finished"?

Yeah we got ours redone a couple/three years back. In two stages, each with a gate. The first gate came with a nice diagonal brace, very sturdy. Second gate, same contractor but maybe different supplier, no brace on the gate and it promptly started sagging, bad. Contacted the guy, and he got REAL snippy. Won't be using him again. I took it off, squared it up and put in a brace myself. That was ATC Landscape.

Their trademark is to put a treated landscape tie 4x4 along the bottom, keep it out of the dirt. To be fair they did a fair job apart from the gate, I guess they're erectors, carpenters not so much. And our backyard is a minefield of bamboo roots, not a lot of fun to dig.

Sorry I was thinking it would have more to it, like the original post:oops:.

Definitely more than I can do;).

I definitely got the short end of the stick when it comes to creativity or artistry .

But as a draftsman, I’m sure you’ve got a good archive of your talents(y).
