Anyone replaced brake pads due to wear?

i may replace mine this year. i'm currently at 103k miles.

the rears, not the fronts.

 

how does the hybrid regeneration and brake system correlate? Can someone explain why i'm at almost 70k and i haven't hear a brake squeak yet...

Friction brake squeaks often are due to worn brake parts. Sometimes brake noise can be caused by a vibrating brake pad, but that particular problem doesn't seem to be a big Prius issue.

With regards to Prius, rust tends to form on the brake discs in rainier parts of the country. This rust will make the brakes noisy.

I have 117K miles on the 2004 and the brakes work well and do not produce any noise. I'll probably replace the front brake pads at 120K miles since I have a new set of pads sitting in the garage.

 

BTW, checked mine today. Look new, except for a moderate amount of dust. Car just turned over 101,000 miles (2007 prius). Mostly highway driving

Our prius has worn about 2-3 mm off the front pads in close to 125k miles. I rely on my wife to keep the discs rust free

 

That's good to know. So I guess it would be fair to say that if you drive reasonably conservatively (so that it's mostly using regenerative braking) then the pads would last around 250,000 miles or more. That means that a lot of people will probably never need to change the brake pads in the life of the car. Pretty impressive.

 

I had my front pads changed at 30,000 miles when they were just on the 1mm legal limit.

I do spend a fair bit of my time in very heavy traffic and am lucky to get to 30 mph some days. I'm also a wee bit heavy on the big pedal.

I was still happy with 30k miles!

I visited a friend on Saturday to show him my 2010. He has 190K on his 2006 Prius original brake pads. He is going for 250K he says! He does do allot of highway driving.

 

I made 195,000 on my fronts, rears still haven't and probably won't ever be done. I'm at 234,000 now.

If you check out other posts and search it seems like the biggest issue is rust and/or rotor issues more than the pads especially in "Winter" climates that get road salt. I should probably get my rotors machined at 250 or 300 but haven't looked at them myself really.

That sounds about right. I use friction brakes infrequently -- maybe once or twice in 20 miles of suburban/city driving, while my wife probably exercises them at most red lights. So our car's average sounds like the driver you envision.

 

On my 2005 Prius, I replaced the front pads at 140,000 miles, and never did the rears. Traded the car in on a 2011 when I reached 165,000.

 

I replaced the front and rear brakes on my 2004 prius at 234,000 miles. I used the procedure found in the Haynes manual. The front brakes were very easy to replace. The rear brakes were more difficult. You will need to be careful and memorize how each part goes together. I found using rubber bands to hold the shoes in place allows you to use both hands to install the retaining springs. I did not change the break fluid - I'll pay Toyota to do this as it is rather complicated procedure.

 

160,000 miles on my '05 and still on original brakes. Dealer service department has them checked as green every time I go in. I'm not replacing them until I hear that they are worn out.

 

Replaced front pads on my 2004 at 132K miles earlier this year, the inner pads were worn more than the outer. Had front rotors turned and rear parking brake adjusted.

 

I have 202,000 on my '04, dealer said last month I have 40% in front and 50% in rear. Amazing!

 

I have changed mine recently as they started to give me the warning sound( a noise you hear when you apply the brakes while driving slowly) , my prius has a 110k miles and I bought it second hand so I don't know if this is the first time or not.

It seems that it depends on where you live and how much you use the brakes, in the area where I live we do have lots of hills and mountains so we use the brakes a lot .

 

I replaced mine at 165000 and only for inspection purposes. They would have gone to 200000 easy. Second set of Michelin aquatread lasted 120000. One thing though. The inside of the rotors were severely rusted, only half the inside bad was making contact. I heard since the front pads rarely work hard, the rotors will rust after time. I replaced them with Centric e coated rotors and ceramic pads. Everything; rotors, drums, brakes, rebuild kits for calipers and cylinders (didnt need to rebuild the calipers or cylinders, i went too far) also all the hardware between amazon and rock auto were 170 bucks. Centric parts had a good response for quality and seem great.

 

Yes Alloosh, you do have a lot of hills and mountains. I absolutely love the Jordan countryside. Some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever encountered. Love Petra, Love Amman, Love Aqaba and the Dead Sea. One of the most beautiful countries in the world and friendly people as well.

 

I had recently replaced them at 135K...i'm guessing they were likely the originals. The dealership where all service was done by the previous owner, never had anything on record.
