Tonight on the “In dash Prius Theater…The nightmare before Christmas.â€

The DVD on the 2006 screen is really fun.

Don't worry I only watch while I am parked waiting for my wife. And to you, you know who you are, I know I may burn out my screen and it won’t be covered, but I have not heard of that happening to anyone because of this mod, so no need to post that comment.

Next step is to put a color TV connection on so I can get the local news while I wait. Or should I just install a PC with a DVD and a TV card?
Do they make TiVo for the car? :D
Oh, and how can I convert to surround sound?

    Hey Force,

You need to move that front-looking camera up to the roof, so you can get a Periscope effect!

OK I found a small bug in my circuit.

When I tried to change my side mirror position using the electronic adjuster on the armrest it would trigger the switcher box to turn on. If I tried to adjust the mirror again it would trigger the switch again to make it go to the rear camera. If I did it again it would turn it off. It was acting like I pressed the IPA button. I dont know why this is happening. I tried lowering the windows and that does not trigger the switch.

I dont think I will try to debug this because its not a real problem. I really did not need to adjust my mirrors anyway. I was just playing around.

If anyone has any ideas on why this would happen when I havnt tapped into anything the mirror motor uses besides the power please let me know.

    Force,
My first thought is install a diode on you positive side where you tap in. Then also maybe one on the IPA button ground side? You should be able to figure this out with a multimeter to see where the power is coming from on your brick trigger wire.

I had a problem the other day with condensation on the inside of the front and rear windows. This was a lot of water. Almost dripping off the windows. The only thing I could think of was that the holes I made in the rubber boot was letting in some moisture. So today I plugged the holes with some silicone caulk. I'll see if this help any the rest of the winter. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow after the stuff dries.

Also I got another false trigger when I swapped out my nav DVD with a back up. So far it does not trigger on anything else. I have tried the CD player, the windows, locking the doors. Everything I could think of that had a button or electric motor. This is not a big deal to me but I thought I would post this anyway in case someone was building my circuit.

I have a front camera (150 degree viewing angle) hooked into a hard-disk recorder that runs any time the car is on; it's incredible to watch the footage, and with minimal trigonometry you can determine vehicle speed even without recording the vehicle speed. It will pay for itself if ever I have an accident.

But I do think I should move it away from the tow-eye mount. Suggestions for location?

New issue with my front camera. About a month or two ago my front camera developed a haze in the picture. The lens is clean and clear and I checked all the connections. I'm just wondering if anyone that knows more about cameras might tell me whats going on and if I can fix it. My guess is that with all the cold wet weather we had here maybe some moisture with some road chemicals seeped into the camera somehow and put a haze on the CCD or something. Thats just my guess.

This would be great at the beach during the summer as girls walk in the cross-walk in front of the IR camera.

Well I got a replacement camera in today and installed it since I installed my hidden EBH today also. What I found was the the original waterproofing stuff used on the original camera had cracked a little. I believe this allowed moisture to get into it. So on my new one I have added some extra clear silicon to seal it up a little better. I also added some 3M film to the lens. I had a little left over from my hood an bumper install. I did this to see if it would help reduce lens damage cause by rocks. My original camera had a big scratch on it. You could not tell from the image on the screen but you could clearly see it when you looked at the lens. The 3M film is clear enough that you cant tell its there on the screen.

I just took apart my broken camera and found that it did have moisture in it. I tried to remove the moisture by heating it up a little but melted the lens. :( I still have a good CCD sensor so if I can just find a lens I could make a working camera. I hope my modifications to my new camera can prevent the moisture from entering. Only time will tell I guess.

I have some questions regarding your project, I didn't read all the forum and I'm not sure by some informations:
-does this video back and rear view cameras work while the car is on the move? For example, can you see on the back of the car using MFD if you drive with 80 miles/hour?:)
-what kind of video input is used there? Does it work for example to connect in a place of the front camera a portable DVD with normal video out, or a Sony DSC portable camera? It was just an example. What kind of video needs to be used (PAL/NTSC, video composite and so on..)
-does it work with Prius 2007-2009, or only with the model 2004-2005, which have analog video input?
-I have an original Prius rear view camera, bought from eBay with 130USD from a salvage.. can I use that?

Please clarify for me all those technical aspects, I want to have a rear back-up camera and to have the possibility to watch videos on my MFD. How can I do that (an non-expensive solution)?

    Yes they do.

Its standard NTSC composit video. You can watch a DVD with it but it will have the "check surroundings for safety" on the bottom of the screen. Coastal has their lock pick device that taps into an actual composit input made for DVD player but their device is expensive.

Yes as long as you have a rear camera all ready. I dont know if you can add one if you dont. I'm just not sure.

Maybe. You will have to look at the tech manuals to see if it can be hooked up to your car.

    Hello again,

I just want to ask you, did you mounted the front-rear view system in your Prius model 2003-2005, or it's the facelift 2005-2009? I know what there is a diffrecence between those 2 models: the first 2003-2005 model has analog input, and the other one has digital input and you should use only digital signals on the video input pin for rear view camera.

I'm not sure about this, someone can confirm me how it is?

Also, in US do you have a direct cable which connects the rear view camera with the MFD? On attached documents (from US market) it seems that there is a cable noted with T12. Does anyone knows the PN of that cable?

I've managed to install my rear view camera this weekend, with the all-time-reverse hack using one ON-OFF button. See pictures in attach, the camera was bought from a salvage from US, I've paid on it 130USD.

The connectors for MFD were used from an affected CD-ROM cable, used inside a PC..

The problem may be condensation as well as moisture intrusion. The only solution is a hermetically sealed camera and a camera designed for outdoor use would be best.

This camera was made to be put on a car. Not really the front of the car but it was made to be put outside. So far I don't see problems with my new camera.

Hey. I would like to add a rear view camera to my 2Gen 2006 (Navi, parking sensors are fitted).
Can You tell me please, can I connect any camera available on the market to the factory Prius screen, are there ready inputs for the video signal?

I do recommend you buying an original Prius camera from eBay, it's full of them in salvage places, it has to be compatible with a Prius G2 model.

As for me, I changed my car with a Volvo V40 Cross Country 2017 and I am no longer following the thread with the modification to Priuses. Hope that the information I have provided was good, along with the LPG mood. :)
