Featured Apparently Gas Cars use Electricity too

    Gas Cars Consume Much More Electricity Than People May Realize

    I figure if "@Tideland Prius" can stoke discussion about EV versus Gas I'll sling some thought porn on it too.
    So a German magazine "has calculated that, for every mile traveled in a legacy vehicle, you’re using about half as much electricity as you would to travel a mile in a pure EV." Most of that electricity is what is known as grey energy, energy embedded in a product, like that used by gas stations and the like. They therefore speculated that an EV would use that same electricity in a more efficient fashion.

    I remember this being brought up before. The 'half a the electric usage of an EV' is likely overestimated. Convenience stores aren't going to disappear with ICE cars for example.

    Detractors will likely claim electricity for refineries may not be accessible to cars because of the grid. The grid, like bridges, needs servicing and upgrades regardless of EVs though.

    Yup we have had discussions about this before of hidden costs, including "protection costs". I would also argue that the less gas you use, such as a hybrid and/or PHEV, this factor of a half would be reduced significantly. Haven't read the source article, but if they are estimating, say the average, mpg of 24 for new cars and trucks, maybe. But then a lot of people don't seem to have a problem with gassing up every 2 or 3 days. Definitely agree though that convenience store won't disappear, and in fact will get more numerous and bigger. If a customer stops in for gas and is there only 5 minutes, wouldn't more customers have to stop for longer periods to fill up and/or wait to fill up their EVs?
