I never liked beer much -- starting from the days in middle school parties -- but in the last few years I have started to enjoy IPAs and some other brews.

Leafing through a fall issue of BON APPETIT magazine I noticed they had an article with the appropriate brews for NFL fans.

Not really an NFL fan, although I do enjoy college football, but just made me wonder about the appropriate brew for Prius drivers.

I'm thinking light, since, after all it is a Prius -- but I don't really like light beers.

For football the magazine was touting: Full Session Black; Bitter American; Lagunitas Hop Stoopid; Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

My nomination for Prius drivers is: Anchor Steam.

Why? Well, I like it, and it was one of the first "green beers" as they used a unique method to brew and save energy. They pumped the hot boiling wort up to large, shallow, open-top bins on the roof of the brewery so that it would be rapidly chilled by the cool air blowing in off the Pacific Ocean (O.K., I am stretching it, since I don't really know what wort is, and I don't know how much energy this really saved, but I still like Anchor Steam).

So, sort of the opposite of solar energy.

Oh, and of course, any alcohol should not be consumed before or during driving, but immediately thereafter is O.K.

    So, let the nominations begin.

Anchor Steam is a great choice, as is Henry Weinhard's, as well as so many other microbrews that are out there nowadays. But my "go to" will always always be Guinness...

But remember, don't drink and drive!

Mother Earth brewing here in eastern NC offers an amazing array of year 'round and seasonal brews. My favorite is a tie between Sisters of the Moon IPA and Silent Night bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout.

    Hmmmm......
    I'm thinking something light.
Almost like drinking beer, but not quite. (**)
Struggling to be pretentious and chic, but not quite making it off of the middle shelf.
A foreign label, but ubiquitous in the US.

    Probably Corona Light.

    YMMV!

(**) Note to those on the Continent and Down Under.

    Yes.
    I know.
"Light Beer" in America is extra redundant.

And one of the positives about lots of Poles in the UK is that the local supermarkets now stock a wide selection of your fine ales (y)

It depends of what you call an ale. Typical ale known in the UK is the warm fermentation ales, here in the East we prefer Pilsener type pale ales. Of which (I hope) you enjoy, thankyou.. :) My local favourite is Warka Strong (reminds me of Belgian type dark beers) and Zubr (Pilsener)... and many others. BTW - it always impressed me how such a small country as Belgium is famous of having over nine hundreds brands of beer  And most of them are delicious. Having a good kick as well. Take just one pint of Westmalle Trapisten Tripel and forget about driving for the rest of the day

We like both beers. The warm (served at 12c) beer is ok but the pilsner beer (or lager) is popular too. Probably more so as the real ale doesn't travel well or store well. If you do get a good place that serves it correctly (and thats the hard part) then it is lovely. Best place is usually the town that makes it.

In spite of my Lancastrian bias, I will concede that Timothy Taylor's Landlord is one of my favourite beers in the world, even though it is from Yorkshire.

But I would point out that Lancashire has Thwaites Original. One of my mates described it perfectly as "like drinking fog".

But I suspect it's difficult for the Americans to find either. For British bitter, I would think that Boddington's is your best bet in America.

If you want to be all Priusy about your beer drinking, Australia does have an option. Cascade Green was launched in 2008, and I think we still have it: it's certified as carbon neutral. And it's nice, as lagers go.

My son and I enjoy trying all of the different IPA's brewed in NC. My staple in the fridge is Killian's Irish Red.

Brewed by Coors? Good Lord, I bet they don't drink much of that in Ireland!

The one thing this whole discussion is missing is us all sat around a table discussing AND drinking these respective choices (y)

It was just recently bought by Coors. I forgot who the original brewer was but as you say it was in US not Ireland :)
