Jeff Cobb did another outstanding job. This is just a summary over the past four months to make it easier to see the trends.

It took me a second to realize the Prius liftback is not on the chart as the line would be 3 times as high as the next entry.

The lease on the Rav4 EV have finally started to credit the tax incentives to the leasee.

Was the Spark EV available for the entire month of June?

Tesla is on a downward slope. Maybe the asterisk info addresses it

I had tried a log scale but it doesn't work . . . too much 'white space' as the Prius hatchback is in the 10**4 order . . . the elephant at the party. Excel does not let me limit the log scale to a subset of the order of magnitude (i.e., I can not set the upper limit to 20,000 when in log scale.) For now, the 'interesting' market trends are found in the 10**3 range and little in the upper half of the 10**2 block.

Let me think about this as there may be a way . . . possibly putting a graphic that shows the Prius hatchback.

It will be very exciting to watch what happens to hybrid popularity as their plug-in counterparts draw more attention.

Currently, the plug-in hybrids are so rare, most consumers aren't even aware what's actually available. Seeing charging-stations in parking lots will go a long way toward promoting them. That raising of awareness will instill a sense of normalness for the regular hybrids. Rather than being identified as "green" or "alternative", they'll be looked upon as the obvious next step in automotive standards... like the way we saw front-wheel drive become the norm.

We're at that tipping point where changing the mindset of the market won't take much effort. No one is questioning business viability or technology reliability anymore. It's all well proven at this point for the regular hybrids.

With each automaker offering high-efficiency choices, the tables will turn. Gas prices will continue to climb. Commutes will continue to get slower and more crowded. It will become harder to justify the purchase of a non-hybrid.

What's interesting is as there's more competition to gas (hydro fuel, natural, electric) I actually heard demand will be less and gas prices would remain steady of even lower.

Though who knows with the big bad oil companies, what are they planning lol

The population will continue to grow and oil costs are going up. So, even just holding steady isn't realistic. There's also the reality of economic improvement. That will increase the demand of everything, including gas. Reducing emissions comes at a cost too.

On the more positive side, just think of the opportunities Toyota now has with the variety of HSD systems available... Small, Medium, Large, with Plug, with AWD, with Towing.

Tesla numbers are estimates. On Wednesday they will announce second quarter results so we should get better estimates for April, May and June.
European cars are also being built but aren't yet counted until the cars get shipped to Europe. So some of the production in July won't be counted until September or so.

This is US only. Prius is not close to 3 world wide. In Japan prius liftback was Number 1 in 2012. The aqua or prius liftback will be #1 in Japan in 2013. Outside Japan and the US the prius does not have high market share.

The prius v is down more than the liftback. I would put it to movement of sales to cars that are selling better than last year. Some undoubtedly are going to the prius c, but also ford is likely picking off some with the c-max and fusion hybrids. I would also think some are going to plug-ins, too. But the prius phv is selling worse than last, year, so sales may be going to the leaf and c-max energi from the liftback. Really the prius liftback is not down very much for the amount of the new competion it has gotten. I expect a redesign a little more than a year from now will help it grow hybrid market share away from ice vehicles.

I'm fairly sure that Tesla Model S production is steady at 400 units per week (20,000/yr).

We will see if there is a suprise of increased production when official numbers are anounced at the quartly report. The big differences between inside evs and hybrid cars estimates, which are only for US cars, is how many are sold in the US versus Europe. There is also a slightly longer delay from production to delivery in Europe because of shipping time.

On the good news for tesla,
Panasonic to Up Lithium-Ion Cell Production to Meet “Robust Demand” for Tesla Model S
Which means tesla expects a big increase in production as early as February 2014, and suppliers are working to get the parts ready.
