Are kids worth having?

    It is not that not wanting or having kids makes you selfish. Face it, people are naturally selfish. It's that having kids (or a kid) makes you much much less selfish. For the first time in your life, you realize that you are not the center of the universe, that you are getting old and will not last forever. According to Richard Dawkins, the British scientist and a great writer [see Bush/Bin Laden post], a person is really nothing more than a biological machine that genes create to perpetuate themselves. We are temporary and disposable - the genes go on forever. Maybe is not us that is selfish, but our genes.

    what about those who dedicate their lives to helping others without any personal gain? Are they the center of attention because they have no children????
