    Biggest problems for Bahamas were certainly wind and storm surge. But NASA has estimated total rain

    I read one interesting article about how private pilots are flying in with various forms of aid. Airport is overwhelmed and asks them to stop.

    as always. we need a vast shelter on federal land somewhere with schools job training and hospitals, etc. for temporary and permanent immigrants to live until they find their way

    US might be a bit constrained in Bahamas response, if it 'looks bigger' than Puerto Rico soon after Maria. more politics. I wish for a large effort regardless of optics. Bahamas N islands are wrecked.

    Also I could imagine Disney Inc. making a large effort because this seems to be central to their cruise-ship activities.

    The Bahamas are not U.S. territories. They gained independence from Britain in 1973 and are a part of the Commonwealth.

    Good question. Not sure if Britain a la Boris (Johnson) or otherwise has special responsibilities here.

    IIRC, the Commonwealth is a voluntary association without political or economic ties to the queen or Britain, even though the queen is technically is the head of the Commonwealth.

    I think China has helped in this region before in recent hurricane times.

    Humanitarian aid if you ask one guy, geopolitics if you ask another...

    Parts of coastal Texas are recovering from another super soaker.

    Tropical Storm Karen will be very close to Puerto Rico in 48 hrs, but seemingly without much further strengthening. Unfortunately there are still about 30 thousand blue roofs in PR so a little wind can have major effects.

    There were at peak about 60 thousand blue roofs there. Off topic here, my associates in research are examining effects of plastics in soils on ... soil processes. In China, a lot of polyethylene (PE) is used as agricultural surface mulch and for tube tunnels or whatever one calls those things. That PE is very sensitive to UV light degradation and it crumbles rapidly. Roofing-grade :) PE contains UV stabilizers and PE fiber mesh. However that material gets disposed, it will be much more persistent.

    "organic" is not necessarily a strong claim. Meanwhile, human-developed polymeric plastics are organic in a classical sense.

    Environmental decomposition of plastics is interesting and a new topic for me. Many fungi and bacteria have been found effective, but if one just makes trash heaps, rates are slow. Then, continents 'leak' and plastics go to see where they get mistaken for food by fish, cetaceans, turtles etc.

    Among the plastics, only polyurethane and nylon contain nitrogen. This may be important for microbial nutrition, they being as N-dependent as everybody else. We are exploring making these with stable isotopic label on the nitrogen. Overall, very interesting stuff.
