Disconnect and reconnect the battery... it could be that simple.
Or, if airbag was deployed in the accident, maybe the mechanic didn't reconnect the steering wheel control cable when he reattached the airbag.
Or just take the car back to the guy who worked on it and tell him to fix what he broke

Clarification: 2009 in Gen 2. Is it 2010?

The two are unrelated, battery disconnect and steering controls for audio. You might not have noticed steering controls stopped working previously, or it coincidentally stopped working at nearly same time.

You probably have in excess of 150k miles logged and cassette wiring in wheel is worn. Cheap part and easy to change.

No, sometimes when you reconnect the 12V, something doesn't reboot itself properly. It's easy enough to try.

Have you tried ALL of the steering wheel controls ?
Some of the memory in the audio head may have been lost and some button functions might not work just because of that.
    (Wild guess)

The radio may have a Setup Menu which can disable the steering wheel controls, and this may have been reset unintentionally.
