    It's odd, with manufacturers on their way to meeting CARB standards, that there'd be a HEEUUUGE desire to gut it - isn't it?

    It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. A small quote from the article:

    The letter asks Trump’s White House to find “a pathway forward” on setting final fuel efficiency standards

    Something I've noticed: when folks are getting a little red-faced, over a pending screw-over, they start resorting to physical euphimisms for time. The expression "a pathway forward" for example.

    Although there is an argument that building out an infrastructure for renewables and charging stations can be a net positive for the consumer over time.

    Another way to label the same thing;
    Those strategies are decreasing industry 'profits' - after all - charge the middle class too much, & then, they simply can't afford that new pickup or urban assault vehicle - & that's what the industry makes the largest profit on. So they have to drop price/profit. If the industry doesn't meet carb standards, they take a hit. If they exceed carb standards, like Nissan & Tesla, they make money on the standards by selling credit to the industry scofflaws ... money that would otherwise be profit for those that fail.

    When you look at the health costs in major cities for treating respiratory and other illnesses caused by car's emissions, it's not clear that emissions standards are really costing consumers money, or just transferring them to health care costs. Believe in global warming or not, it's clear that we end up breathing what comes out our exhaust pipes. One need only look at a city like New Delhi, which currently has absolutely terrible air quality, to understand the effects of nearly unregulated emissions. Los Angeles is a good example of how these controls are effective, which has relatively good air quality considering the number of cars packed into such a small area.

    What would you all do?
    I would start giving incentives to low CO2 cars like hybrids, and put less emphasis on subsidizing batteries for the sake of huge batteries.

    I put my name in for Trump EPA...well I also put my name in for Obama EPA...see where it got me.

    Funny thing about batteries. Secondary batteries in particular (another word for rechargeable). Their improvement seems crucial at scales from highly portable technology to vast power-distribution networks. To me it is among the best directions for R&D money. Their applications in the 'one to few tons' transport category is part of, but not most of the story.
