"In the October accident involving Delphi, the front of its 2014 Audi SQ5 was moderately damaged when, as it waited to make a left turn, another car broadsided it, according to an accident report the company shared with AP."

Sounds like they were all minor, and possible at speeds under 10mph. It sounds like less of an issue than the Volt and Tesla fires in the news.

From here 6 things I learned from riding in a Google Self-Driving Car - The Oatmeal
Some of the scenarios autonomous vehicles have the most trouble with are the scenarios human beings have the most trouble with, such as traversing four-way stops or handling a yellow light (do you brake suddenly, or floor it and run the light?). At one point during the trip, we were attempting to make a right turn onto a busy road. Everyone’s attention was directed to the left, waiting for an opening. When the road cleared and it was safe to turn right, the car didn’t budge. I thought this was a bug at first, but when I looked to my right there was a pedestrian standing very close to the curb, giving the awkward body language that he was planning on jaywalking. This was a very human interaction: the car was waiting for a further visual cue from the pedestrian to either stop or go, and the pedestrian waiting for a cue from the car. When the pedestrian didn’t move, the self-driving car gracefully took the lead, merged, and entered the roadway.

    Freaky.

Interesting... I never thought of going to The Oatmeal for tidbits about self-driving cars. I like some of his comics.

Anyway, reminds a bit of a segment at ~10:40 of
which I posted in the first thread.

I haven't rewatched the whole video yet, but the segment at about 9 minutes in caught my attention. If the car was making a non-protected left turn and blocked the intersection like that, due to the pedestrians, he could've gotten ticketed. I got exactly that in downtown SJ a few years ago. :( A bunch of people were suddenly and chaotically running back and forth outside the crosswalk of the street I was turning into, even though they had a don't walk. Cop apparently was somewhere near me (behind?) and ticketed me for blocking the intersection of opposing traffic. :(

Upon looking back further on a thread and a discussion w/a real cop (from another cityin CA), I was cited for CVC 21801a (V C Section 21801 Left Turn or U Turn). His words were

I've just been waiting for a reason to post that picture. The world would be better if we all just sat and reflected more.

I too am a little interested in trying the the cars out on a closed course with the driving aggression set to high. Perhaps Google can take them on a charity tour or something.

Sign me up! I'd like to experience that, then see if I can have a shot at topping it.

You can also watch it at

    Love it! Thanks for sharing!

There is not too much in the world of technology than self driving vehicles. Love the possibilities.

I don't want a car that will drive a dead man to the hospital. Just sell me one that will warn me if it thinks something bad is going to happen. I will give it more autonomy if and when I start to trust it,

So you clearly don't agree with the guy in the video.

And lol to thinking you are a better driver that an autonomous vehicle.

Not at all. A fully autonomous vehicle is my dream car. I'm just tired of waiting. A prototype assistant that I monitor, teach, update, reset, etc. should be in my next car. If it works well I may trust it with my life.

i would do a lot less traveling by car, so i guess that's a win win for the environment and middle east situation.

    Why would you do less?

I would do a lot more if cars were fully autonomous.

I see what you mean in town. On the interstate I love looking around. Plus you could either read or be on a mobile device during your travels.
