LOL, I had always thought Highly ImPriused's avatar was a picture of himself.

Never heard of Riley Martin before. He sounds interesting.

Maybe Highly ImPriused is Riley Martin.

Forgive me if this has been brought up before, but the 51-60 covers virtually twice the age span than the other age brackets. I'd suggest the op breaks it up into 51-55 and 56 to 60 or something similar. Any thoughts?

I'm 29 in November, and Kate is 36 in September. Does that make us young prius drivers then?

    Oh Qua Tangin Wan!

Riley Martin is a man I first heard about while listening to Howard Stern. Riley believes in aliens, and says he's been visited by them (and even that he has alien family).

I don't think Highly ImPriused is really Riley- Riley is far less coherent, at least on the radio. I just didn't expect too many Stern fans, or Riley fans, on Priuschat. The priuschat group as a whole seems much more serious than that.

Looking around at the group attending Hybridfest, I'd say the age averages are right in line.

But the 50-60 does need a 55 break.

It's now probably too late to separate the 51-60 category in half.

So, as Patrick had first pointed out, we'll just have to take into account that that category spans 10 years, while the others (except the 65+) span 5 years.

Ever since Human Geography in college I've thought population pyramids were interesting. Here's the one for the US in 2000, compare with the poll results. But what's with that decline in 20-30 year olds, born 1970 to 1980? And notice how the number of females outpace the number of men as they get older... feed us fat food all our lives and then we die ;-) Anybody remember when our mothers stayed home and made fried liver for dinner?

With age categories like those shown in those government census population pyramids, no wonder so many think that year 2000 was the start of the new millennium.

The interesting question is the degree of penetration of Prius ownership versus the population age distribution. So I took the 2000 Census age groups and added 8 years and scaled them to match the poll group reported distribution:
    Column 1
    0 lo-hi poll Prius
    1 16 20 03.00% 0.3
    2 21 25 07.49% 0.8
    3 26 30 09.74% 1.1
    4 31 35 09.36% 1.1
    5 36 40 10.11% 1.2
    6 41 45 12.73% 1.3
    7 46 50 08.99% 0.9
    8 51 60 23.60% 1.3
    9 61 65 07.12% 0.4

If I've done my sums right compared to the US Census data:

    • 130% - kids born 1953-1957 are Prius owners at PriusChat
    • 110%-130% - kids born 1963-1982 are next
    • 90% - kids born 1958-1962 - huh?
I have no hypothesis. Of course this pretty well shoots the "CNW Marketing" claims ... again. CNW Marketing claims Prius are status vehicles owned by retired and college kids. Sorry but based upon our very imprecise polling and best estimate of age distribution in the USA population, they are wrong. The difference is we show our work.

Cracks me up how we hear from so many drivers in their 20's who swear that everybody else who drives a Prius is older. Oops.

I'm ageless. Been that way at least since turning 30. Which I've done several times now.

It looks like the high school / college age crowd isn't into 'new cars' like a Prius. This is understandable given their likely income.

The first dip occurs in the 45-50 age group. The sample set it large enough so I don't have a clue. Does this age group hang out in Internet chat groups? Is there some independent way to test Prius ownership?

The 51-55 group is the strangest, because it was the 51-60 group!

The older groups are pretty much as expected ... well established and not having to drive as often. A Prius makes most sense for someone who has a lot of driving.

    Hi Bob,

Pls note that this poll includes 51 - 60 as a category spanning 10 years, unlike the other categories. Hence, that category has more responses compared to the others...

    RATS! I missed that:

    Column 1
    0 low-hi polling Prius
    1 16 20 03.00% 0.3
    2 21 25 07.49% 0.8
    3 26 30 09.74% 1.1
    4 31 35 09.36% 1.1
    5 36 40 10.11% 1.2
    6 41 45 12.73% 1.3
    7 46 50 08.99% 0.9
    8 51 60 23.60% 1.3
    9 61 65 07.12% 0.4

Well this is less bad. I'm in the 51-60 age group. The 46-50 group remains unexplained.
