About to make this my weekend project. What do you all think about this? Does the metal look cracked to you? Replace the whole thing or wire brush it down and spray some rubber coating?

Yup. I live in Iowa which is the norm of road salt lot of snow up here. undecided for the coating though as there are so many of them out there. Used rustoleum products for quite some time.

I wouldn't waste my time with it, that is MINOR for a "rust belt" car and as you confirmed, Iowa definitely qualifies!

If you are gung-ho, wire brush, then a wipe-down with "glaze remover" would be highly effective prior to application of spray undercoating.

Looks pretty normal. I don’t see any cracks or anything other than surface rust (but it’s really impossible to tell from picture).

If you decide to coat it with something eather sand blast it (probably not practical) or cavity wax type of thing that can be applied directly to rust (as wire brush does only remove lose rust) you can then use rubberized undercoating on top of that. Just putting on undercoating won’t really help.

Toyota suspensions, in particular the bolts, seem to display a dismaying amount of rust. Our slew of Hondas never exhibited this inexorable, wide-spread rust. Something to do with legislation reducing the ability to use the more effective rust preventing coatings/finishes? Due to toxicity?

If it were legislative, it would apply to all OEMs uniformly, clearly that is not the case.

There's a lot of Honda's in our household, never see suspension or bolt rust like this. Maybe galvanizing the frames and better bolt coatings, who knows.

maybe toyota doesn't want to increase the cost of the car, since the rust never seems to be a safety issue.

Looks much better. Sand it all down and undercoat it. All ready for the winner now. 1478561081217.jpg 1478561091276.jpg

i took my dash apart a couple months ago as I notice this weird electric motor rattling sound like a small motor turning back and forth some where behind my steering wheel and the right vent next to the start button. Is there some kinda of pump behind the dash because I sure didn't see one when I took the dash apart behind the steering wheel as all I saw was the power steering computer module? I only hear it with in side the car and no where outside of the car or engine compartment. It also happens while stationary and also when the AC is off. Its like someone rattling a door nob twisting it back and forth. Possibly be the electric steering motor doing that?

Repost from other my other thread. Here is that electric motor noise I was talking about. ignore that brushing sound as its just me moving my phone around. You can hear a rattling back and forth sound behind the dash board more near the shifter. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9ZD2aOUG4DaVDJObWRMdzZWOG8

That looks really good on the axle there. Lots of work.

Go to Home Depot and buy a few cans of PB Blaster CSP. Thats Corrosion Stop preventer. Its spray grease that stays where you spray it and does not smell. Hose the suspension down with this product especially the front end. Works great will protect the metal form corrosion and no squeaks or creeks. Catch the door hinges the hood lock the hood hinges the trunk lock and the key lock hole.

And that noise your hearing is the brake vacuum motor. To replicate it with the car off just push the brake down a few times and it will evoke that noise.

Thanks. I think I figured out that little motor noise as its only audible with inside the car and not the engine compartment. Most def seems to be my servo motor going out. The sound sounds exactly the same in these two videos.
