I've been seeking opportunities to try out the parking assist features in our 2016 Prius Four Touring, as it is rather weird to have a car steer itself and it's a little tricky figuring out what to pay attention to. The parallel parking assist works quite well.

To engage the back-in parking assist, you're supposed to line up your car correctly--in a T across the back of the vacant space--and push the parking assist button twice. The first puts it into parallel parking mode, the second into back-in parking mode if available.

Well, ever since the first couple of times, I haven't been able to get the back-in parking mode to engage. On the second push, the parking assist simply disengages.

Is there a trick to getting the car lined up properly? Do I need to move in closer to the parked cars, or does it only work when the parking space is very narrow?

You do have to have cars on both sides of the space.

Are you pressing the button twice fast enough to avoid the computer to think you are disabling the system at all? Maybe that is not making the computer thing you want back-in assist, but simply to disable the system. Just a guess.
I doubt it is not working at all.

IIRC, this works differently than the IPA in the Gen 3. With the Gen 4 Prius, you actually need cars on both sides of the spot. On the Gen 3, you can back it into a spot manually with no cars (as long as the painted lines are visible) but with the Pre-Support function, you need at least one car.

    Are the following situation satisfied?
    1. You're perpendicular to the open spot
    2. You're within 1m/3ft from the parked cars
    3. You're pressing S-APGS when you're stopped, perpendicular to the spot

I thought IPA just gave you warnings. I have IPA but no button on the steering wheel. 2014 Touring Four with convenience package.
Update/found the button on the dash in a hard to see spot. Thought it was Parking lights.

For backing in parking, you don't need cars on both sides of the parking spot, but it will place you further away from the lone car than you would probably park manually. When there are two cars it will shuffle you in or out until you are equidistant from each car (unless you cancel it when you're happy where you are). I haven't tried the parallel parking yet.
You have to be 3.3ft or less away from the parked car/cars or the sensors may not pick them up and travelling at less than 19mph
(I usually stop before pressing the button).

You're thinking "Intuitive Parking Assist". That one just uses the 12 sensors to warn you. S-IPA (or APGS to be more clear) is the automated parking assist. It's accessed via the button to the left of the steering wheel that has a steering wheel icon and a "P" overlaying it.

Found the button today. Now to test it.

Does it have to be parallel parking or can it work pulling in between two cars?

IPA works for both parallel parking and stall parking. It will also pull you out of a parallel parking spot (assuming there's a car in front, otherwise, pull yourself out lol).

Read the manual to make sure you understand the conditions under which it will operate but for the most part, it should be reasonably intuitive as it does have onscreen instructions on the 4.2" TFT screen.

Umm, when I was in NY, the Sienna I was in had clearance sensors (front bumper mounted). Some of them went off when pedestrians passed by but they had to be really close to the sensor (as in nearly brushing up against the bumper)

Front and back work but the sides are still a test in progress. Could be the car has to be moving.

I'm not sure I have it down yet, but the issue with engaging back-in parking is that, indeed, the timing of the "second" press to engage it is tricky. I think the trick is that you can engage parallel parking with a quick press, but that to engage back-in parking the button needs to be pressed _and held_ for a little time.

Starting to remind me of the oil light reset thread. "Hold the left button while tapping the right thing a ma job three times, then lift your right leg and whistle Dixie."

The first press brings up the parallel parking screen and the second press the straight in screen, don't press twice fast, just press twice.

Did a quick check and it kept wanting to back into the slot . Will try again this week. Also it did not recognize a median and thought it was an empty space. Kept having me pull past the empty spot. Must be a user issue .

Guess I should have pressed it twice . Any pull in options ?

OK, so a feature I will most likely never use.
