Let's just say it attempts to let you know? Even with the beep, my brain doesn't always "get the memo". It takes a physical/linear shifter for me. Even that's not bulletproof, but a lot closer.

Mine has the collision avoidance at the front but not at the rear. It would happily let me reverse into anything without attempting to warm me or intervene!

I love this "return to centre" lever - wish you could get one on a hybrid but sadly, no ...

And while they're at it, one of these too:

Oh, you and your new-fangled ideas! They'll never stand the test of time to become classics. :sneaky:

    Yup!

And I love the little joystick. I always know where to reach for it and which way to move it. Never have to look down there.

On the other hand, I just drove a friend's new Honda Odyssey. Nice, comfy, quiet ride, but the shifter took some study and I suppose one would eventually learn to work it by feel. Eventually.

It just occurred to me - anyone, anywhere can drive this:
    upload_2018-6-1_22-44-26.png ... or this upload_2018-6-1_22-46-26.png

But - this would really confuse people who drive sitting on the wrong side of the car:

    upload_2018-6-1_22-50-0.png

Just as this would confuse us who drive sitting on the right side of the car.

WHY - aren't they both the same??

Separately from a tangible answer, why do I find this humorous.
I'm just imagining the speculative logic being applied here by the tech or anyone who would believe these are the programmable options.

I mean, imagine Toyota engineers in front of a dry erase board, with the words "Back Up Beep" scrawled in big letters on top.

Engineer A: "Well we could do what we have always done, and have it beep repeatedly when put in reverse, but that seems to annoy some people, so we need options".

Engineer B: " How about we make it so it either beeps repeatedly OR can be programmed to make one constant never ending beep?".

Janitor listening to conversation: " Are you kidding me? Your option is to make it go from being annoying to REALLY REALLY annoying? How about either repeated beeps or a recording of Gilbert Gottfried screaming "You're Backing Up Cowboy!" ?

As he dumps the overfilled recycle bin

" I'm no expert, but I kinda think people would either want to keep the reverse beep or have the option to maybe turn it off or at least reduce it to one short singular warning beep. But I don't get paid to make these types of decisions.."

    Engineer C enters the room

Engineer C: Gottfried agent says he'll do it, but the repeated phrase has to be " You do realize you're in reverse RIGHT?..then he repeats "In Reverse" continually until the Prius is taken out of reverse.".

Engineer A: (Grabbing Dry Erase Pen)....Gottfried for the win!

    Audible sigh from the janitor.

Here's my quick way to check if I'm in reverse:

The Audio/Nav screen shows the rear camera image rather than graphics. I'm amazed everyone else is depending on beeps and the gear graphic.

Yes, I love the joystick. The motion to get into a gear is same, no matter what my current state is.

    Yes, true.

    Almost always.

But not when your mother decides the radio is too loud just after you've slotted in R and presses POWER OFF on the radio. I think the only way to get the camera back is to go back to N (or P or D) and then to R again.

Mine doesn't do that, if I turn the radio off it doesn't kill the screen, just the radio.
