Backup Camera Activation

NOW the question is - do 06s have the purple wires in the same position behind the vent panel as Evan's 04?

I'd check, but my tach covers that JB, and I don't want to remove it to check right now (though if noone answers in the next few days, I'll check, as I want to wire this in before I take several vacations over the next couple months).

 

I have a few questions to the people that are more knowledgeable on electronics.

1. Is the 12v that you pull from the gray wire on the MFD the same 12v source as the power outlet? Just wondering if maybe the one to the MFD is conditioned before it gets there. I'm asking this because I'll be pulling 12v from the power outlet for my switcher box and if I can use the 12v power outlet source to activate the reverse signal that would eliminate one wire from my circuit.

2. Would it hurt anything if you activated the reverse signal and then put the car in reverse? Would that be 2 feeds of 12v going to the same place?

No harm. Putting 2 12V signals to the same wire gives you.... 12V.

1. I probably wouldn't use this wire to power anything other than these mods. I haven't seen a diagram or any indication that the grey wire is powered through a fuse in the fuse box. instead, coming from a bundle of wires like it is, i'd bet it's coming out of the ECU with the other wires. While you may be just fine using it to power your box, you may also be pulling too much current, and cause the ECU to burn out, which would be a lot more expensive that burning out a fuse. IMO, go for the safe bet and a little more work.

2. No, it doesn't hurt anything. without getting into too many details, the potential on the wire won't change (it'll still be 12V, regardless of the number of 12V sources you have in parallel), and since the potential across the component doesn't change, the current through it will remain the same as well (the resistance of the MFD doesn't change, dictating that the current remains the same for a fixed voltage).

I wont be powering my switcher box from the gray wire. I will be pulling 12v from the power outlet to power my switcher.Since the reverse signal is 12v I will just use the 12v I get from the power outlet to activate the reverse signal.

I’ve got my camera ready to go. I am on vacation next week and I am looking for another source to splice into the system. I am thinking about buying a male and female connector to link in at the BH1 connector under the dash and I see two holes through the fire wall one high and one low both in the center of the dash. My camera uses a 12 volt source so I will have to get a fused feed from with in the engine compartment or I guess I could bring that into the cabin as well. Last night I upgraded to a on/off switch on my anytime reverse mod. That helps. I hope all is going well with your install.
