Because of security concerns, I disabled FLASH a long time ago......and I get pretty much NO autoplay pages. I suspect there is a connection.
I also run Ad Blocker Plus and do not have those long delays while other servers send in their ads.

NONE of that helps when the resident database manager pukes though.

They're switching over from flash to HTML5 -- Disabling flash wont be effective for very long. I broke down and added an adblocker to my Chrome -- I hate it because these sites make their money that way, but it's been painful slow ever since the recent outage. I normally tolerate ads...

Since Apple killed Safari support for Windows several years ago, I assume you're running OSX. If so, Safari should update right along with other stuff from the app store via a notification. I think you can make it automatic, but I make it notify me so I can see what's going on.

I think you have to sign in to the app store to get updates, but I may be wrong on that. I always sign into the app store on all my So's... Yes, a Macbook Pro is OSX (now called MacOS), though you can install windows if you want.

    Being a ex tech.
It's generally server issues. Or else updating of the forums and having some code not compatible.
Possible host is being ddos attacked and will slow everything down. Dang dodge owners probably haha.

I'm using the app due to ease at times. A pain searching but still.

Oh ya adverts can cause major issues also.

Mac lol good for business poor for home haha.
Windows compatible with most but very vulnerable.
Linux useful all around with some limitations of software needs

@Bob Comer is right. I keep calling it OSX out of habit. It's macOS and you should be running Sierra, version 10.12.5. My Macs are always signed in to my Apple account. When you set up a new Mac, it prompts you to either create an account or sign in to your existing account. So, if you've never done that, I highly recommend it. That way it's simple to keep everything up to date with security patches and so on. Make SURE you don't lose that log in information. Apple, I think, gives you three wrong guesses at your password and then you'll be on the phone with them to get things working again. Don't ask me how I know that!! But, if you do need to call them (or chat on line) their tech support is the very best in my experience.

Sierra is the name of the latest operating system which Apple released last fall. If you click the little Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen, you'll get a pull down menu. The top menu item is, About This Mac." Click that and you'll get something that looks like the picture I've attached below. You can find out a ton of info by exploring that.

The Mac notifies, too, but isn't as obtrusive or obnoxious about it. On mine, a notification will appear in the top, right corner of my screen telling me there are updates. I can click the link to update right away, or overnight, or click the main link to open the App Store app and see the specifics. I always do the last of those. You can set it to be automatic. Open the App Store app and go to your preferences.

If you click that little apple icon I mentioned earlier, it should show you running version 10.12.5. Is that what you get? If not, click "Software Update" and the App Store will open and you can get everything updated. Hit command-comma to bring up the preferences in the App Store to change your settings if you need to make changes.

I din't see if you said how old a laptop it is, but 10.9.5 is quite old, so I wouldn't be surprised if it never updated. (10.9.5 came out in late 2014.)

Yup! That's really old. In fact, there are some older utilities that might not work when you update because Apple tightened security rules to keep malware from accessing certain functions that these utilities accessed. The one that got killed for me was called "Menu Meter" or something like that. I found a newer, better utility in just a few minutes, though.

OS X 10.9 was Mavericks, which came out in Oct, 2013, so 10.9.5 would have been some time in '14. Since then, it's been Yosemite in 2014, El Capitan in '15, Sierra in '16. This fall will be High Sierra.

while we're chatting, is it okay to install the video player? i can't think of the name right now, but apple recommended against it, originally. i can watch some, and others say 'plug in missing'.
