Not very useful but interesting. I had been running on EV then parked in the cold to wait for the wife. Turning on the heater started the ICE (of course). It charged the battery about 0.6% then stopped charging, ICE still running. So I switched to HV and it restarted charging about 0.3% and then stopped charging. So I switched back to EV for a few seconds than back to HV and the charging resumed another 0.3%. Once the coolant temperature reaches 130 degrees the ICE stops. Nice heat until the coolant gets down to 118 degrees and the ICE starts again. Back in EV and the battery is charging and the HV/EV switching continues to add more charge. Until time to leave I picked up about 5% SOC, kept warm. Not good for mpg but 5% SOC is nice.

If you left it in EV mode, ICE won't cycle until coolant hits 80 deg F. I have seen it that low when I was in Eco.

I just wonder what the logic is of stopping charging while the ICE is running and you are going nowhere.

Charging is not free - the engine would use more fuel if it was charging than just to idle.

Not for me. Left in the EV mode it always restarts the ICE at 118 or slightly less. Until I tried the stacking trick I had sat for fairly long times in EV with several restarts 130 > 118 > 130 >... I do always have the ECO mode on, haven't turned it off since I got the car.

You get cabin heat now and propel the car (later from battery).

What temp did you set at? Auto?

I think I set mine at 68 or 70 deg F. That was before outside temp dipped. Maybe my PiP would cycle ICE the same as you now.....

Kinda flawed logic because you can just drive the car with ICE since ICE generated EV doesn't save you anything.

He said he was waiting for his wife. Sure, he could drive in circle but that's more wasteful.

If the ICE was run just to provide heat while waiting, that I can understand.

But manipulating the system to charge the battery with the ICE, that I don't understand. Using the ICE to charge the battery and then using the battery to move the car is inefficient; just use the ICE to move the car. When the battery is being charged by the ICE, the ICE uses more gasoline than when just idling with no load. There is no free lunch.

Interesting. I assume there is a good reason it stops charging after a certain amount. This could be a really good discussion as we all are likely to have a time or two waiting in the car with the heat on this winter.

Maybe for others, but since I'm the only one in my car, my coat keeps me warm enough, I only run ICE to thaw the windshield, once the windshield is clear, I turn off defrost and climate control. I also found out by doing that, The car returns to all EV mode, thus I can continue to work in EV.

Still, California has a point. If the engine is going to turn on to warm the cabin, then it can come up to temperature faster by running harder, for a shorter duration. It would make more sense for the engine to come on and charge the battery, and then shut off when it comes up to the required temperature.

The whole point of the engine turning on in the first place is to waste gasoline by turning it into heat. Why not waste it a little faster while charging, and get the heat going even faster?

I can't imagine engineers overlooked this simple concept, but it still doesn't make sense to me the way it currently works.

I have waited with heated seats on. If the windows fog up so what.

I would not turn on the cabin heat unless someone in the backseat needs heat.

First, PiP battery holds about 1/10th of energy in a gallon of gas.

Second, when ICE is run, about 30% of energy get into the battery. The rest is lost as heat and can be used for cabin warmth. PiP also recycles heat from the exhaust, otherwise would be lost.

Is it an ideal situation, no. But I disagree with the notion that running the gas engine is a waste, since it accomplishes so many things.

Heater temp set at 74 not auto, just fans on. Outside temp mid 30s.
