I found a 2017 prius prime advanced for sale today. It has 10,000 miles on it. The carfax says it had the battery replaced a few weeks ago. That makes me leary of even going to look at it. What's your opinion?

a 2017 with only 10,000 miles. Assuming the factory drive battery already died, it must have been a battery that was failing from the factory. That is a total wild card.

It has no indication to the health of the rest of the vehicle.

Does the carfax specify which battery?

    Important question.
With mileage that low, it would not be surprising for it to need a 12 V replacement that soon.

Yeah my moneys on the 12 volt battery. If new cars are delayed in transit or languish on dealership lots it’s not uncommon that the 12 volt packs it in.

All the carfax says is "battery replaced".

It gives the name and number of the dealership that replaced the battery. It was just last month. Maybe they'd be able to tell me.

It's about one it a trillion that they replaced the traction battery.

If this car is the jackpot winner it's the first ever afaik. It would have been under warranty, so go to Welcome to Toyota Owners, register, and enter the VIN. It'll list all the service that Toyota has done to the car. There's really no other option if the traction battery fails.

But I'm with the others who go, "No way!" It has to be the 12V. A 4-year old 12V failing is very believable. ESPECIALLY if the owner only drove it 2,500 miles a year. That's a death sentence for a 12V unless it's kept on a smart charger.

Need a starter battery to boot the computer and connect the traction battery.
The report was probably for that.

Thanks everyone. That all makes sense. Hopefully I can get there before it's gone.

    Of course they could.
AND they should be able to test the new one and be sure it really is "good".
Might just need a good charge.
OR they might have mis-diagnosed the problem at that time.
