Usable portion, as reported here in several threads is 62% (from 23% to 85% SOC). It is 85% SOC when fully charged and (I think) 23% at "6 bars on HV battery icon - the level to which the car is aiming when in HV mode.

Ok, I thought 10% buffers seemed too low, but the math works out to give us 3.5kWh of usable charge. If we only use 62% that's just 2.7kWh charge. I thought we were at ~3-3.4kWh usable?

Is the 23% low end with a full 'hybrid' portion?

The usable charge is about 2.7-2.8 kWh. The recharge energy from the wall socket which includes battery charging overhead is about 3.0-3.2 kWh.

Ok, got those numbers confused obviously.

If 23% is the portion recommended to leave the car at for storage, that seems low to me for anything more than a month or so.

Apparently, it is not low as rockerdan reported here. Anyways, that's what Toyota recommends.

?? Isn't that what we are talking about? We've just been trying to figure out what that left the battery at in actual percentage. If it's 23%, then the Toyota recommended SOC for storage is on the low side compared to every other li-ion battery storage recommendation I've seen.

If I will store the car, I will go by Toyota recommendations. They could easily say: store it with 4-6 EV miles (or whatever) - but they did not and they know why.
Remember, the battery is made by a joint venture between Toyota and Panasonic and they know what they are talking about.

Mike - Just remember that the plug system was retrofitted into the Gen 3 body. I would hope that when the Gen 4 shows up that Toyota has a more elegant solution for this as a plug in option should have been part of the plan from day 1.

Yes, but we know that by and large the batteries used in current EV's are pretty much off the shelf cells. There is no magic going into these cells that would not be making it into the (currently) much larger consumer electronics market.

    Maybe but maybe not.
Consumer electronic batteries are not warranted for 8 years or more.

Right, but we know that Tesla, who has put considerably more effort into Li-ion batteries than Toyota, is using a standard Panasonic 18650. If anyone would be pushing the boundaries right now, it'd be them. They offer the same warranty, and it will bankrupt the company if those batteries don't hold up.

Click on edit and when "more options" comes up, click on that and then you can edit the title.

Self discharge is very low. I have not measured it yet but should be lower than NiMH.

SOC is 23% when HV portion has 6 bars/pips.

The original poster is not looking for a solution , just wants to complain about it. I recommend getting an Audi to experience some real electric problems worth complaining about.
12v batteries go dead on every car. More computers = more parasitic load. The use of the big battery to charge the little battery is an interesting concept. I guess the car designers were worried about killing the big battery if someone left the dome light on. Plus you can't do all the high voltage safety checks with the computers off.

Reading between the lines, it seems the OP doesn't even plug in his PIP for charging.

The same (essentially) design goof/oversight is in all regular Prius models as well; nothing to special about the PIP in this regards.

Gen 3 had the plug-in design included from day 1. Efforts to convince otherwise have clearly been successful.

Think about what's been needed, ever since the Gen 2 prototypes. It has always been the weight for an affordable & profitable battery that could deliver enough density to meet they 20 km capacity goal.

Even the current 60 kW traction motor now isn't being fully utilized. The battery is the issue still. But at least the initial criteria has been met.

    Yes.
You have just reminded me a lecture given by one of Toyota executives when launching Gen3, saying it was designed with a plug-in version in mind.

I honestly never knew this. That gives me a little extra peace of mind.
