I think they are a better choice for the dreamliner.

Some updates, it looks like they are not close to a conclusion.

It takes a long time to get faa certification and test a component for an aircraft. That is why technology moves so slowly. If boeing were doing this today, they likely would have used a different chemistry, but the choice was probably made years ago. I know airbus is planning to use saft, and should be through faa certification of the battery. I don't know what chemistry they are using. Airbus is watching the results closely to see if they need to change their design.

 

Tonight's news said it was thermal runaway, but they don't yet know why.

 

Yep, they only know a little more than that they caught fire.

At a briefing on the progress in the investigation of the Li-ion battery fire on-board a JAL Boeing 787 at Logan Airpot in Boston (earlier post), NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman reported that the investigating team had found signs of electrical short circuiting and thermal runaway in the cells. The NTSB is working to determine the cause.
