    Hi all,
I will be doing my front brakes shortly, and was thinking of doing them myself (with the help of a buddy - money is tight).

So - Q - what is a good brand for brakes and rotors? Also, do I really need to change both - or can I just do the brake pads? (with the rotors looking OK).

    Thanks,
    Rob

if your rotors are not bad, just change the pads. The pads should be OEM, since you only change them once or twice in the life of that car. Go for quality

Yeah Toyota pads and shims, and the rotors sound fine. You can check rotors against spec, with dial gauge (with magnetic base) and micrometer. Acquiring both instruments would be about $50~75 USD.

My signature has a link with brake job tips and repair manual excerpt, has torque values and rotor specs.
