I'm looking to get a bike rack for the Prius. I'm mostly looking for a hitch mountable one since I had a bad experience with the roof racks (drove it into scaffolding because I forgot I had bikes on the roof ) Is there a difference in the receivers that mount under the rear bumper? They all seem to be the same price, but maybe I don't know something about them.. I'm thinking a two bike rack would be enough for me. I'm looking for one that could swing back so I could access the trunk while the bikes are on. Any suggestions? Thanks!
What'd you guys recommend Thule T2 Classic or yakima holdup? I know you all said to get Thule', but I'd like to know why is it better.
I have a Torklift (expensive, but local to my community and less intrusive than other models) and Thule Helium 3 rack. The Prius has plenty of clearance to open its hatch without striking this rack, so a non-tilting rack could be lighter, stronger, and pulled in closer to the hitch to shorten the lever arm of that overhanging weight. The very same rack on my Subaru Forester requires the rack to be tilted back to open the hatch. The door angles are vastly different -- Prius opening almost straight up, while Forester needs to swing back quite a distance.
Got the Curt Class 1 tow mount and the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Rack. Both are flawless. Took a minute to figure out how the exhaust hanger works but after that it went smooth.
