At the local scuba shop, there's a sign: The air is free. We only charge for delivering it to your tank. At some gas stations the compressed air is still free. I don't know if it's a regional thing. Every place I've ever lived, you pump gas into your tank, and then you walk inside and pay for it. But I've traveled places where you have to pay in advance. Maybe the 75 cents for air is to pay for the vandalism in some areas. Are the stations that charge for air the same ones that require you to pay for gas in advance?
A few years ago a clerk died trying to prevent a "pump n' run" robbery so a law was passed in BC - all payments have to be either credit/debit card or pay with cash inside before you pump, 24/7 in the entire province. The first time I ever experienced having to pay first was in the USA several years ago. I didn't understand why the pump was pumping...
