ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES OUTPERFORMING THE OVERALL MARKET
And speaking of car sales, as we reported earlier in the week, sales in the U.S. were down nearly 3% in October. But there’s one segment that’s more than holding its own during the downturn…electrified vehicles. According to Wards Intelligence, sales of battery electrics, hybrids and plug-in hybrids, were up a whopping 25% last month. BEVs, which for the most part is just Tesla, posted an increase of 5.4%. Hybrids were up an impressive 46%, while plug-ins declined about 2%. And for the year, electrified vehicle sales are down over 5%, which normally is nothing to celebrate but with the overall market down 17% through October, it’s pretty impressive. And if you’re wondering why we didn’t include fuel cells, that’s because sales of those vehicles are miniscule, less than 100 were sold last month.

The article has a table showing the sales by type.

Fuel cells sales are on hold for the entirely newly redesigned 2021 Mirai that goes on sale to the general public in late December. This car will be a game changer for Hydrogen.

funny - the OP thought the thread was about BEV. Thank you for putting this discussion back on track to the never-unpopular, science project -

If you opened the link, you'd see that was part of the quoted passage. The October sales for just PHEVs on the table exceeded the total number Mirai sold in the US. It is the biggest FCEV seller here, and its best month in 2020 was 64 cars. FCEVs impact in the US car market can be lost as a rounding error.

One state with sales with select dealers selling them. Can’t expect much until expansion happens.

How is that expansion going to happen?

Gee I don’t know, with vehicle growth and adoption worldwide just like any new technology being introduced.

as mentioned above, hydrogen fuel cell car growth/adoption percentages are pretty much less than a rounding error, statistically.

None of Apple's recent 'inventions' were new. The music player, smart phone, tablet, smart watch, etc. weren't new when Apple put them out. It took Apple's marketing to make them must haves in the US though. The originators didn't do the marketing as well, or they thought like you, that growth will just happen if the product was made available.

That is the wishful thinking behind marketing hydrogen FCEVs today. It hasn't lead to meaningful growth, and it is why China cut back on hydrogen subsidies. Today, you have to show how your hydrogen project will lead to that meaningful growth and adoption in order to get government cash there.

A new technology has to be compelling for the public to adopt it. There was nothing compelling about the compliance BEVs beyond being able to refuel at home. Tesla made a BEV desirable for its performance and design, not just because it was a BEV, and they started building the Supercharger network to make it possible for their cars to be used beyond the range around the owners' homes. That's why Tesla is outselling other BEVs, and even the ICE cars in their segments.

There is nothing compelling about the hydrogen FCEV to the average car buyer. Its main selling point is that involves no changing their current car behaviors. That alone isn't reason to switch from an ICE then. There is no performance advantage over the ICE car. It is zero tailpipe emissions, but the majority of car buyers aren't willing to pay extra for that. The FCEVs cost more to buy and fuel than the ICE equivalent.

The only reason FCEVs have seen the tiny growth that they have is because of huge subsidies. In California, the incentives mean a net cost to the leasee of just a few thousand dollars over three years. Way less than even the cheapest econo car available. Even with high depreciation, off lease FCEVs still need such high incentives, that they become effectively free to the buyer. Without those incentives, the buyers would pass on the cars. South Korea fixes the price of hydrogen to keep it competitive with gasoline, but the level means hydrogen station owners don't make any profit off the fuel. It's low, but gasoline brings in enough profit to keep the doors open.

They new Mirai looks like a nice car, but it isn't any nicer than a Lexus of the same price, and it will likely be of lower performance. It is going to still need those massive subsidies to sell. Is the plan to just hope prices of FCEVs and hydrogen comes down while governments are still willing to hand out the cash for the cars and infrastructure? China is one of the most important car markets, and they've already said no more cash without proof that a hydrogen project can move people to buying the cars without the subsidies.

Big selling point - why do you think people are still buying Hybrids.

Not sure what you have in mind for range? One can drive their FCEV from LA to San Francisco. If your taking about driving from LA to NY most people would fly. Than again most people who own a Tesla or FCEV have an additional ICE vehicle at their disposal.

What proof do you have to make that statement. I purchased a CPO Mirai with 0% interest (sign of the times) and the fuel card. How many Tesla’s are getting free charging at the Super Chargers?

What about Tesla. Toyota is not aiming at Lexus. New Mirai is going to set the standard is EV luxury for 2021.

Not true. China is fully onboard for Hydrogen development and supports future development of hydrogen infrastructure and vehicles.
