    Nope:(.

Just a little light that tells you when the coolant is too hot:cool:.

A engine temp gauge would have been nice, but that was soo 20th century .

I distinctly remember driving my daughter-in-law's Pontiac Sunfire to Costco for a tire repair, muttering to myself: "even this pos has a coolant temp gauge".

Wow...as others have said...this is not good news at all.

From reading the thread it seems quite a few of us are jumping to conclusions here. However, I'm hoping this is an isolated incident NOT related to the EGR. Should be interesting when/if we find out what the actual problem was.

Yeah I hope more info is forthcoming. Dealerships doing warranty work tend to be terse. They might even replace head gasket when it wasn't necessary.

Don't forget that a temperature gauge only works - if someone looks at it. I know a number of people - yes, relatives - who had major damage when they "didn't notice" it going up.

And - if it's a catastrophic failure - like in Dad's case, the hose blew off on the way home from service because it wasn't tightened (yes they fixed it), the gauge went up and back down again so quickly he didn't notice it because there was no water left - he saw lots of steam, glanced at the gauge and it was actually lower than normal. Driving on the Motorway at the time, the head already needed replacing by the time he pulled over.

I like the concept of the IDIOT Light like in some cars back in the '50s/'60s. Or, maybe - enter limp home mode for long enough to pull over.

Sorry for the late response but my prepaid phone doesn't work in this country I guess!

Anyways.. It wasn't diagnosed as the head gasket, I have been told it was the exhaust coolant exchange pipe.. And even better, it's being replaced under warranty! That and their doing my electrical recall . Parts should be in tomorrow (Thursday) , and fixed that day .Unfortunately I'll be out of the country till mid December so hopefully my friend that picks it up will be able to verify the work!

Can I edit the title once I confirm it was what they say it was? Don' want to scare people!

    Good news.

I've just reported it - requesting it be re-titled:

Maybe "blown head gasket" should be kept in the title though, with explanation, since it was the focus of discussion.

Okay I’ll bite... what does an “exhaust coolant exchange pipe” do? Is it the EGR cooler? I’m not surprised to hear Toyota covered this under warranty- especially being just out of warranty. Nice to hear they stepped up, though.

It runs coolant through a chamber alongside (hot) exhaust gasses, to accelerate engine warm up. It's further along the exhaust system than EGR, no connection. It's a fair sized contraption near the front end of the horizontal run; you can see it just looking under.

Thank you. It’d be interesting to learn what the root cause of failure was....

Or maybe "Losing coolant, blue smoke coming from exhaust" since those were the symptoms and everything else was speculation until it eventually got diagnosed.

Maybe a fail weld? It's similar to the EGR cooler in construction: a coolant radiator in exhaust gas. A lot of stresses I guess.

Regardless, the initial question and most of the response concern head gasket. Responders were surprised with "early onset" head gasket failure. Maybe retain the OP's original title, plus added suffix, about the outcome.

Even though it's not the head gasket, it still sounds pretty serious. And, it happened at relatively low miles on the car. Let's hope it's an outlier.

Yikes...this may be even worse news if it is related to an EGR clog. Hopefully just an isolated case with a defective part. Let's wait for definitive info though. :D

Hoping for it, but if the OP leaves the car at the dealer unattended, I’m not sure we will:cool:.

You know what happens while the cats away:whistle:?

I would love to see the failed parts or at least have them left in the car for personal diagnosis after dealer intervention ;).

    Hope we can see that(y).
