Anyone know how to check if the headlamp control leveler sensor at rear of car is working properly?

Hmmm. It's a ride height sensor. On my Range Rover there are 4 of them for each air spring. I used to measure the resistance with a meter. and test with a 6volt battery to see it move. I'm not sure if the Toyota unit is the same.

The short projectors are sane prices now you can project a gen 2 for about 165 and a few hours of time . At current pricing. I don’t spend enough time on night driving anymore

That is pretty much what I figured out decades ago: factory fog lights were just pretty decorations, meant to be 50-state legal. "Real" functional fog lights were just 48-state legal, so couldn't be factory installed on 50-state cars. Proper functional fog lights had to be added aftermarket.

I haven't followed the issue enough to know if the legal situation has changed, as factory headlights have since improved enough since that era to mostly fill my needs.

The '04 RAV 4 I had that I put factory fog lights on, they made a huge difference in light output.

I hate my 2013 Avalon fog lights. Might as well as not be there as they accomplish nothing. I would like a good aftermarket alternative but have no idea where to start.

Morimoto has a couple of LED assemblies. If you HID headlights, they would match the color better. Headlight Revolution's and Morimoto's website would be good to check out.

It wasn't total light output that mattered to me, but the pattern. Was the pattern of the fog lights also useful and good?

Yes, they had a great beam pattern.
