Brake groan

I have 2013 Prius v 2 just hit 400 miles and it does groan first thing in the morning. Sometimes it groans even without pressing on a brake pedal. I feel like it groans when the steering wheel is turned fully either way in order to get out of my apartment garage.

And I live in Southern California.

Scheduling to go see my dealership soon.

Hope they can resolve this annoying noise.

 

KKJJ-I'm also in S. Cal. Just called my dealership (Irvine Toyota) & of course they have never heard of this problem.

Prior to this, I called Toyota Customer Care @ 800-331-4331 & filed a complaint with their Corporate office. Again, they claim they have never heard of this problem.

Additionally, a complaint can be filed online with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Maybe this will help motivate Toyota to take this serious.

I don't think the NHTSA will do anything about it because it does not pose any safety risk. This complain will never put a dent on any of the prius model line unless there is a safety issue.I found none.

 

They could initiate a TSB

I also found this blog in Japan talking about the same noise.
It's in Japanese but basically he's saying the same thing.

He can hear the same noise coming from the rear of a car first thing in the morning.
He even made a video of it.

He's also saying that they can fix it by replacing something on a rear brake disc.
He doesn't say who and what.

I think we all need to speak up about this a lot more.
Because it's just annoying.

That's close but I can't be sure. Interesting that it could be something other than the brakes.

My dealer told me that I would have to leave mine overnight so they could verify the noise when it was cold. Wasn't going to do that for this small a problem. Guess that's Toyota's way of dealing with it. V3 has just under 17k on it.

 

Nope, nothing like that. Low pitched groaning sound, not squealing.

 

So for the last 2-days, I've been prepared to video the sound as I leave for work in the morning. Thought it would be helpful with the dealership.

Wouldn't you know it; no groan sound.

Without having to go through 10 pages of discussion, can you please tell us if they found a solution or pinpointed the problem? Is there another video?

 

I don't think a solution has been found. Different experiences depending on dealerships involved. Some dismantle brakes & rebuild, but problem persists.

What's interesting to me is many have called Toyota Customer Service (Corporate) and they state they have no record of this being a problem. That's what they told me as well, but from this thread its hard to believe them.

Have you tried taking your wheels off to pinpoint the issue?

 

I would rather let the mfg deal with it, but based on what I have read, they don't have a solution yet.

and then it stopped after that? looks like moisture on your windshield (maybe dirty windshield)? was the car sitting out in the cold last night?
