I read on another thread that replacing the pads and rotors on a GEN II prius is no different than on most other cars and your typical mechanic can do it as long as they disconnect the 12V battery before they begin work.

Therefore I intend to go with the lowest bidder but I have a few questions.

    1. Does the 12V battery need to be disconnected just to "check the brakes"
    2. Should I wait till they are at 1mm before I have the pads replaced or is it wise to do it at 2 or even 3 mm?
    3. Knowing the car has 138K miles and this will likely be the last time the pads are replaced, is there a specific type of pad I should look for?
    4. Any other advice?

you can check pad thickness and disc condition without removing 12v. at this point, i would get oem pads and discs and move on. $400. or less is a good price. all the best!(y)
