    Maybe it has gotten easier for others to pose as the legitimate owners.
    Or because key systems that are easy to get replacement keys for, just make it easier to steal the cars.

    I don't think they would be having this issue if they had purchased a Canadian market car.

    Looks like an ordinary transponder key. A locksmith should be able to reflash the immobilizer ECU. Just like a Gen1 Prius. Maybe even the same transponder version.

    Why before any car trip I make sure both I and my passenger have a set of keys to the car we are driving. She loses her purse, my pocket protects. I get robbed, her purse. Both...we have more serious problems.
