Better knock on a big bit of wood. All of my breaks have been from oncoming vehicles travelling too fast and kicking up rocks as they pass. Often they are pulling a wildly swinging trailer. Fortunately no breaks in the Prius yet after 110,000kms.

got my first crack at 1k miles. Talk about being  It spread into a 10" crack from the bottom center of the windshield. Local shop claimed it as a chip...so got the whole thing filled for free. I am not excited about replacing the windshield after one. South Texas has the worst rates for windshield issues in the state. My Titan (much older) has about 7 chips and a crack to boot. Something I have to accept where I live. And not just windshields. Smashed fog lights are popular too.

will a hood deflector from prius chat store help reduce windshield cracks?

It might in some cases but it would not have saved my windshield. I saw the rock come up from the car in front of me in a big arc and down on the top of the windshield. The deflector would have to have been 4 or 5 feet high to prevent mine. :D

I'm surprised that the windshield is so expensive -- has the windshield stayed the same for all the previous models?

You can get a Lexus ES window for around $200 -- US made glass. Even my Mercedes US glass was less than $500.00

My windshield broke when my front passenger leaned forward to pick something up and stood up and hit his head on it. Shouldn't have happened! How do you get a new windshield for free??
    Thanks

    Welcome to Prius Chat. :welcome:

Assuming you mean a new windshield and not a new head for your friend :) any auto glass shop will be able to get one. You should talk to your insurance company first, tell them what happened, it will probably be covered under the comprehensive clause of your policy. The insurance company may also be able to recommend a shop in your area.

A few states have mandatory glass replacement -- so it is in the policy ... some insurance companies also include it in the policy ....most cover it under the standard policy deductible ---

I have never had one hit my deductible .... so I always pay out of pocket.

Earlier in the thread a figure of $500.00 was reported.

Well apparently my car reads the forums too...cause I just got my second crack on the left side of the windshield. Huge hole where something hit it. This crack is is over a foot long right in the line of sight.

Depression is the word that comes to mind. :(

I have just had my second cracked windshield in 3 months. I believe there is a design flaw. The hood and front end slope down so low that when another vehicle throws a stone it hits the window. In other vehicles not designed so low a stone would probably be deflected by the grill.
Not sure all the issues with this car are a trade off for gas mileage.

Good luck proving that one. There are many cars that are lower than the Prius with even sleeker windows. Off the top of my head, just about all sports cars.

I just bought my 2011 Prius 2.5 weeks ago and I got a nice round crack after something hit it on the freeway.

Most windscreens broken in our area are from rocks cast by trailers towed behind speeding cars/utes passing on the opposite side of the road.

I just had my first cracked windshield for 18 years, only my third in 30 years of driving, I couldn't believe it. There wasn't a car for half a mile in front of me but two others had just passed in the other direction, we were all three travelling at only 15 mph or so over speed bumps in an urban area. The annoyance of it is, when I bought the car, three months ago, it had a new windshield put in because there was a chip in the original. This one now has a 12" crack running up from the bottom centre, towards the drivers side. :(

36,000 on my 2010 windsheild with no cracks or chips so far.. Better luck than I had with a 2000 Dodge Dakota I bought new. Less than 1/2 mile from the dealership after taking delivery, A loaded gravel truck with a box edge covered with loose rock, dropped one on my new windsheild.
Made a small fish eye right behind the inside rear view mirror. The Insurance co sent out a guy to do the free glue fix save. The repair is almost invisible and covered by the mirror. Still holding after 13 years. Does driving style change your chance of getting a broken windsheild?? Maybe??
When someone passes then turns into my lane while still IMO too close, I back off to gain a little more room. Reduces the chance of rock hits and getting an oil / mud bath from road spray in rain.
Early Monday AM, have to be at the dealer for the brake accumulator recall replace. They warned me that it is a 4 hour job. Juist wondering if they will loan me a car to go shopping, or if I am stuck at the dealership for 4+ hours ??

Not a club I'd like to be part of but unfortunately I was made a member last month. It turns out I had a very teeny tiny chip in the windshield in the far driver's side corner (where the black is so I never saw it). Well, we started having days where it was hot in the day, cool at night and apparently this caused it to crack. I came down to the garage at work to find my car in this condition. I didn't even know cracks could happen that way! Anyway, I was also not pleased to find out I had no separate deductible for glass on my insurance policy so I had to pay for the whole thing out of pocket. Oh well, I'm over it now.
