    Wait. .... What??
Parked next to one of 3 Primes here in the Disney employee parking structure & couldn't help but notice its Green HOV stickers ....

They're lookin' a few shades off, of the usual color.
Guess maybe someone's not keeping up w/ current events. Is this new for 2018?

RED is what you need now to 2022.
Green/white issued after 1-Jan 2017 can be converted
Your plug-in vehcles are HOV toast Hill, I think as of 1-Jan-2019 (sorry)

I am a bit confused, if I buy a Prime today, my HOV sticker is good till Jan 1 2022 ? However if I wait till Jan 1 2019 to buy one, it will be good till Jan 1 2023? I have a 2015 Plug in now...btw, with 100K miles and no, YES No repair work....

I am not up on end dates, but all Primes 2017 and later are good to 2022. Late 2016 Primes could be in HOV trouble.
I think idea going forward is 3-year eligibility

All HOV stickers are good til 01/01/2019 only including the red ones issued this year. Red green or white...etc. DMV website said by OCT this year all have to apply for new stickers.

I bought my Prime in January of this year. I got green stickers. I should've got red ones instead?

You are good!!...there will be a chance to exchange green stickers issued AFTER 1-Jan-2017
I also think it is OK if your car was purchased after 1-Jan-2017 but has 2016 stickers.

The only folks in "HOV trouble" are for plug-ins purchased 2016 (or before) with 2016 (or before) stickers.

That isn't a big question as it has been already answered. "All vehicles in the chart below that were issued a green, white or red decal in the timeframe specified above, will qualify for the new Clean Air Vehicle decal." Link

The reference to the timeframe speaks to cars that received either red, white, or green decals from Jan 1, 2017 and onward. As DTS stated above, all decals (no matter what color) currently expires at the end of this year (Dec 31, 2018).

one would be toast if that's true. The other? falls under convertible. Guess it'd best to read up.

sorry for the mini brouhaha - but better than finding down the road guess.

Most Prime owners will be fine.
But I am thinking 2400 Primes were sold in Nov/Dec_2016 and some of those probably in Ca. and some probably had 2016 HOV stickers. They could be in HOV trouble, but so far nobody here has said they had that situation. It is possible Ca. would make some fixes to the law.

The good news it appears older used plug-ins, including PiP, if they have *not* previously had HOV stickers, could get stickers now and apparently qualify out to 2022.

I posted this somewhere before but here is my situation:I bought a brand new 2017 prius prime plug in hybrid and found out that the car green sticker was issued on Dec 22, 2016 ( yes the dealer applied for the sticker the end of 2016). By this, the sticker will be expired in Jan 1st 2019 and cannot be renewed.... Pretty suck. I am thinking of reapplying for a new sticker with reason damage ..... Any other suggestions? It is so unfair to buy a new car and can only have access to carpool lane for 8 months left. BTW, the dealer did not disclose this information and I found out after buying it...

I am thinking you are probably OK as long as you purchased in 1-Jan-2017 or later.
I believe that situation is discussed in the Green Car Reports article I posted above.
    Let me review it again.

"...Owners of qualified vehicles purchased before January 1, 2017 will have their stickers expire on January 1, 2019. For cars purchased in 2017 or 2018, owners can apply for new red HOV-lane-access stickers that will be valid until January 1, 2022."

So you would be saying that article above is incorrect, but I think they have covered the bases.

hmm...right now I am not seeing a clear answer for your predicament. Obviously you can apply and see what they say, and make your case. Seems like we need some clarification from the rule makers.

The timing for that will be announced, not yet.

    >>Meanwhile on the question of Prime purchases with pre-applied dealer HOV stickers dating to 2016, I have sent an email to a California legislator for clarification. I will advise if I get a response.

I believe the *thinking* is that plug-in purchases after 1-Jan-2017 will probably be approved for HOV to 2022, but I do not think we have that in writing yet.

Yes, please. Keep us 'early adopters' in the loop. Don't want to be one of those 'no good deed goes unpunished' people for the lack of a few weeks.

You would be surprised by how much a legislator knows about specific laws or the fact that their interpretation doesn't actually matter.

The law itself doesn't appear to distinguish purchasing the car on or after January 1, 2017, but relies on when the decal was first issued.

    Vehicle Code 5205.5
    (a) For purposes of implementing Section 21655.9, the department shall make available for issuance, for a fee determined by the department to be sufficient to reimburse the department for the reasonable costs incurred pursuant to this section, and pursuant to the eligibility provisions in subdivision (b), distinctive decals, labels, and other identifiers that clearly distinguish the following vehicles from other vehicles:

    . . .

    (5) (A) A decal, label, or other identifier issued pursuant to paragraph (1) or (3) on or after January 1, 2017, and before January 1, 2019, is valid until January 1, 2019.

    (B) A decal, label, or other identifier issued pursuant to paragraph (1) or (3) on or after January 1, 2019, for a vehicle that had been issued a decal, label, or other identifier pursuant to paragraph (1) or (3) between January 1, 2017, and January 1, 2019, is valid until January 1, 2022.
