Can a 2010 Prius engine be swapped w/o removing the transmission?

You cannot remove the engine from the top there's very little space to maneuver the best you can do is remove the head though the top, even that can be a challenge, better to just drop the front subframe w/engine and transmission in one piece and remove the engine from there. .

Yes you can remove just the engine from the top. In fact this is the easiest and most logical technique to use. Works for me. Just had to remove unbolt the water pump and swing it to the side without removing it's electrical plug. Also you will need to remove the crank pulley for extra clearance along with the motor mount on backside middle of motor. The rest is self explanatory.
