I bought a virgin fob off of ebay, but all the locksmiths in the area want $150 to program the key. Does anyone have techstream or a key programmer? I'd appreciate any help with this matter!

Where in the east Bay Area are you:whistle:?

I’m in Fairfield and commute to Pittsburg everyday;).

I’ve got Techstream but never tried programming a fob. Willing to try though :).

    Let me know(y).

I've got a 2014 Prius Plug-in and need to disable the backup beep and program a new smart key.

I purchased the "Fangfei Mini VCI Car OBD II Diagnostic OBD2 Scanner to USB Port Scan Tool for Toyota" - I don't think I want to go through the nightmare it sounds like it might take to get working. Raytheeagle - Any protips on getting this working (in particular, what specific software are you using etc).

I was going to start with win7 32 in a KVM on a mac laptop and use USB passthrough - lord knows that is complicated enough as it is and may introduce too many variables when actually trying to get a hacked version of techstream.

I've done this before for a knock-off VW OBD adapter (VAG COM) and it worked fine. Probably easier to work with @Raytheeagle though, since he already has this process figured out.

    Ray, what're you charging?

Yea, just too cheap to buy a used key at the going rate - waiting for a deal.

I didn't know you could program a key fob with Techstream, too cool! Man I am glad I knows yous guyz over 'ere!
(George Carlin voice in my head)

Forgive the off topic, well more side talk. But am looking at this one; New Mini VCI J2534 OBD2 Diagnostic Tool Code Reader for Lexus Toyota Techstream | eBay

Have a new Surface Pro, Win 10. So need or want to be able to use it, in case old laptop is not up to the task.

But would this one be correct, if any one has a chance to take a gander at the link.

Bummer thing. Just found out I can't program my gen 2 fob for my gen 3.

All excited. New, high tech toys!

    I'll get my coat.....

Ray, I will let you know if I run into any problems when installing Techstream into my old beater laptop. Thanks in advance.

The old laptop might be the best for the task;).

Depending on the vendor, there might be a threat of malware which you do not want to risk a new laptop for:unsure:.

As far as syncing a new fob, there is a utility menu that has a procedure to follow:).

    Makes the job easy(y).

Biggest challenge for me was to get the laptop to “see” the j2534 cord:whistle:.

Once going through device manager, it now is able(y).

Thanks Ray! I am worried about malware and dearly love the new surface pro. (not kidding, this thing is awesome! Honestly, every thing hard or software you try, it just snaps to and doez. Amazing)

Did get an old Acer, NetBook and loaded it with Vista. But so slooow...

As this is way above my pay grade, Gonna do a thread on TS for dummies or some thing like that. A step by step guide to fumbling, LoL

Well, I spent the entire day getting this sorted out and am happy to report success!

How to program a new HYQ14ACX Gen3 Prius Smart Key using Techstream (Tested with 2014 Prius Plug-in)

Working as of 2018-03-04 - Use caution and proceed at your own risk.

    • Laptop capable of running a Virtualbox (virtualized) instance of Windows 7 32-bit (eg. 2013 Macbook Air).
      • Download Win7 32bit ISO Win7_Pro_SP1_English_x32.iso from Microsoft (required a Windows 7 key, which I had from ages ago).
      • Make sure to run at least 1024x800 as Techstream will clip off the screen at lower resolutions.
      • Disabled network access to the virtualized instance as it is an old and running unpatched version of windows/java/lord knows what. Only used IE to get chrome
      • Installed Sun jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe as Techstream may require java.
    • Working/Registered Techstream 10.30.029 Software
      • I literally had to go through about 10 versions of Techstream. This is the only version that worked (most importantly, the others would generate a bad reset "Seed" number that would not work).
      • Finding this version and getting it "registered" was the hardest part of the process.
    • "KKmoon Mini VCI Car OBD Diagnostic Scanner OBD2 USB Interface Scan Tool for TOYOTA TIS Techstream Diagnostic Cable & Software"
      • Amazon shipped this cable overnight
      • USB port and is passed through to host operating system (win7 32bit).
      • Requires "MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.exe" installed on host operating system.
    • (Smart Code Reset) This requires a Toyota Techstream "Passcode" for "Smart code Reset"
      • Works with ANY key, including previously used but functioning.
      • May be needed even for troublesome "new" keys.
      • Search for "Immobilizer Pincode Calculator"
      • This costs $$ (although some smarty here is probably going to tell me they can do it for free)
    • (Smart Code Registration Method)
      • Works only with NEW aka "Virgin" Keys (Allegedly)
      • Does not require a "Reset Passcode"
      • New keys on ebay for around $85
Specific steps on how to "Smart Code Reset" in the Techstream software are covered in a number of places on the internet, although I just used this PDF "Instruction_PASS_CODE_Calculator_ENG.pdf".

In the end I was able to pair a second "new" Prius key (It would NOT pair with the normal Smart Code Registration, had to do a Smart Code Reset) as well as change backup beep warning.
