Can the engine be saved.....

    Below is a picture of the coolant from the engine that I replaced yesterday. Is it worth keeping my engine and rebuilding it with 2015 pistons and rings or would there be too much damage already. The engine was running fine except for a misfire/shudder from time to time. Toyota said it had low compression in cylinders 1 & 2.

    I’m moving to California in two weeks and just wondered if it would be worth bringing or not.

    Sounds like a head gasket job. Or are you going through a lot of oil too?

    Wait, hold the phone.. moving to California from Virginia? Dump the car before you go. Out there you can find plenty like it but with no rust. California mechanics hate working on east coast cars, they have no idea how to deal with rust.

    Dump it, move, get another like it and smile!

    Already changed the engine and its my only car, the newer cars don’t really have rust here either after they started dipping them from the factory not really an issue. I’ll probably give it to my son and look for another IV model if they aren’t too pricey when I get there.

    It didn’t use any oil that I noticed.

    Then just head gasket.

    Likely due to EGR and intake manifold clogging. Lots of info here.

    I have already changed the engine in the car I’m driving. I’m talking about the engine I took out is it worth rebuilding?

    That is what I’m trying to figure out, if there are some trustworthy shops I would like to have the bottom end rebuilt and maybe pickup a car with a bad engine and fix it.

    I'd say if you have the room for it both on the moving truck and at the new place...take it. It can be used for parts for a quick swap if something goes wrong with your current engine. Otherwise, try and sell it to help offset the cost of your new engine (part it out on ebay if you have the time). The head gasket is super easy to fix with the engine out of the vehicle though, but if you do the updated piston/rings, even better, of course if you take care of your new engine...it could be years before you need the rebuilt one.

    I’d see what @Marine Ray knows in the Reno area about shops;).

    @The Critic has done some investigation in the Bay Area as well as Sacramento, but that would be a haul for you :cool:.

    If you have the room and it doesn’t cost more to ship, I’d say bring it along(y).
