According to the current 2004 election polls; he only scares the hell out of half of us.

Probably true. I don't think Ottawa gets a lot of news nor tourist coverage in the states. Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, even Lake Louise, sure. Ottawa? Hmm, where is that? Is it a country or something?

The only reason I know that Ottawa is the capital of Canada is that for 15 years I lived within range of the CBC station in Winnipeg, and the CBC is a million times better than public radio in the U.S.

Maybe some day I'll make it to Stratford, Ontario, for the Shakespeare festival.

Isn't info like that supposed to be general education? World's countries, their capitals and some information (population, languages, economy) are basic education in Finland for kids ~10-12 yrs old.

Sure, way back when I was in school, we alternated between U.S. and world history each year. But our tiny little minds forget and if they aren't reminded with some frequency, we forget :) I imagine Washington DC is mentioned around the world WAY more often than any other capitol. Might have something to do with not being able to "ignore the elephant in the living room". :-(
